On March 28 our Daughter, Freya, was admitted to hospital with Type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes is a chronic auto-immune disease for which there is currently little understanding of cause and/or cure. It has changed her life forever and she undergoes multiple blood glucose finger pricks and insulin injections everyday, with no break. This is taxing on her physically and mentally (and on the whole Family).
So far she has shown great strength and resilience and is still a happy, healthy, strong 7 year old Girl.
The emotional strain of this disease can be difficult to overcome on many levels- but the medical and financial burden that is added to this, makes a challenging diagnosis more difficult. Type 1 needs round the clock monitoring, which means, for a young Child like Freya, that one of us had to cut our work hours to be home with her as much as possible; when school is out, and over the summer, this means no work for one Parent.
The reality of most summer camps is that they are not prepared for the needs of a type 1 Child, so we are hoping to save up to go to a Family camp that is for Children and families with Type 1.
The costs of general type 1 Diabetes supplies- glucose monitoring equipment, insulin pens & Insulin, are high. We have not yet started a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) or insulin pump, but these are all costly additions down the road, when she is ready.
We are lucky to have insurance that covers some basic costs, but for some upcoming doctors apts we will also be paying out of pocket for expenses. And some upcoming equipment will be costly after basic insurance.
We are asking for financial support in order to lessen this burden for us, and particularly for Freya. So that we can ensure that her Diabetes is managed as best it can and to hopefully enable her to participate in Type 1 camps so that she can feel an element of "normal"
thank you!
