What is the film?
"Tyller Kever An Ifarn" or "Hells Lurking Place" is a cornish language horror short - An exaggerated and exciting modernised take on 90's horror classics set within 1400's Cornwall. The film Follows a group of Cornish soldiers routed from a battle against the English in 1497, the men seek refuge in a cave and quickly become trapped inside however they aren't alone and must fight to survive the night and find a way to escape their hellish situation.
Why make the film?
The fight for language and culture is broad and alive in many disconnected communities, myself and a number of the crew come from communities and cultures whose languages are on the verge of extinction and are fighting to find their place within contemporary Western society. The fight is especially alive within Cornwall today and as a crew having met and lived in Cornwall alongside personal connections to movements like these we found ourselves wanting to create a project to help the fight and popularise the movement.
As for the film itself, it also spawns from personal passions within myself and the crew, having Lifelong loves for history and classical horror media like the gems from Sam Raimi and John Carpenter. watching the exaggerated gore and joy of 90's horror was a way of bonding and escapism from life for us and it felt right to merge our passions together and hopefully leave a mark on the genres and and movements that have and continue to inspire us.
Who is making the project?
Director - Cameron Ryan
After spending 18 years of my life surrounded by a city, once I moved to Falmouth it led to me fall in love with Cornwall. From its fascinating scenery to its folklore. This fascination is what guided the story (and setting) as we began to build it. Coming from a culture that my family became disconnected from in order to settle in England. I connected with historical films when growing up such as Kingdom of Heaven, Troy, gladiator and Andrei Konchalovsky’s Odyssey mini-series combined with a newfound interest in indie horror media; the base genre and themes seemed pre-determined in my head before any sort of story began to form.
My concept for this film finds its base in 80’s camp / exaggerated horror. The Pure joy that comes with watching the horror feels lost within the modern horror genre, especially with the industry's gradual move to CGI-based effects instead of the practically done films.
Though inspired by this quirky set of media, the visual style is drawn from more modern and visually distinguished films, the evolution from French new wave handheld to the up close and personal found footage medium has partially dictated our shooting style. With a lack of movement and manoeuvrability within the confines of the caves we're stuck up close and personal with our cast and creatures. This paired with its use of auditory effects was drawn from the Taiwanese folk horror “Incantation” directed by Kevin Ko back in 2022.
My intentions as the director is to modernise the camp and over-the-top fun horror from classics such as Evil Dead 2 and Prince of Darkness but within contemporary Horror stylings.

that is fantasy. As an emerging producer, Script Supervisor and Assistant director,
I’m looking forward to working on a venture that will stand out in my growing cornish filmyk Portfolio.
Writer - Niall Beckwith
Since I was young I wanted to work within horror. I grew up reading the stories of Lovecraft and Poe, leaning more towards Lovecraft's stories of horrors emerging from the depths of the ocean and the far reaches of space. This continued into later life where I studied film and screenwriting more seriously, always being attracted to the new wave of horror films that we find these British isles producing. I'm Irish and consider my Gaelic identity an incredibly strong part of who I am as a person. To be able to tell a story that features a traditional Cornish folklore spirit is an honour I don't take lightly. Being able to represent the culture of one of my fellow Gaelic brethren is such a privilege.
Cinematographer - Rebecca Bouron
I’m excited to work on another story. The script is already painting vivid scenes in my mind. Can't wait to collaborate with such a fantastic crew and capture another film in Cornwall's breathtaking landscapes.
For this folk horror film, my cinematography draws from films like Nope(2022), Memories of Murder(2003), and As Above, So Below(2014). Nope(2022) inspires my approach to night scenes, where darkness and subtle framing heighten tension and fear. Memories of Murder(2003) influences the pacing and fluid camera movements that keep the viewer on edge, especially during intense moments. As Above, So Below(2014) shows how handheld camerawork in confined spaces can amplify claustrophobia and terror. My goal is to use these techniques to create a visceral, immersive atmosphere, building suspense and fear as our characters must face what is hunting them.”
Sound Department - Industrial Sound Light And Stage
At Industrial Sound Light and Stage, we specialize in crafting immersive audio-visual experiences that elevate storytelling. Our work on the short horror film “Hells Lurking Place” set in medieval Cornwall was a unique opportunity to blend historical richness with modern sound and environmental design. Tasked with developing chilling soundscapes for eerie cave environments, our team meticulously crafted audio atmospheres that echo the haunting silence of underground chambers, the unsettling drips of water, and the undoubtedly gut-wrenching gargles and snarls of the ominous ‘Creature’ rooted in and of the folklore that permeate Cornwall's history of similar entities.
Our crew, Max Marchment and Samuel Gillingham-Laine worked together to develop ideas for how sound would impact the environment of the film. “Initially starting with Foley recordings we developed hilarious techniques for making absolutely horrible noises for the creatures, one of which included Sam gurgling into the microphone and saying dialogue backwards!”
Drawing inspiration from Cornish legends and the region’s rich history, we worked closely with the producers and director to incorporate elements of the ancient myths—whether the mournful cries of lost soldiers or the creeping sounds of supernatural creatures. Cornish folklore, with its tales of dark spirits, wraiths, and most interesting to us the ‘Tregoss Moor Beast’ provided the perfect foundation for building tension through sound, allowing us to immerse the audience in the film's terrifying atmosphere. At Industrial Sound Light and Stage, we take pride in how our sonic landscapes breathe life into the ancient, mysterious world of Cornwall, making it a chillingly real experience for viewers in “Hell's lurking place”!
The project so far...
The project so far is underway and developing rapidly, we have already secured funding from production companies the project is being made in association with but the scope of the project brings additional challenges that this extra fundraising will help tackle. we want to create a project that gives a fair and in-depth representation of Cornwall and its culture alongside creating a realistic portrayal of our chosen historical period.
