As a fashion designer, I want to make clothing that makes women feel beautiful while keeping our earth that way as well. I want to be different, I want to be a part of the art of fashion in a sustainable way, being mindful of the environment, and maintaining its beauty.


As early in the process as the spinning of thread, and as far along as the packaging and distributing of finished garments, the careless manufacturing of fashion contributes heavily to pollution and waste. As a result of the extreme excess of clothing made everyday the textile and fashion industries in China alone creates about 3 billion tons of soot each year (thats like a billion hippos, a billion polar bears and a billion fully grown mooses hovering in the sky blocking the sun!) In the UK, 1.2 million tons of clothing went straight to landfill in 2005 alone.


But, there are still people utilizing natural and organic techniques that are gentle on the earth, and good for its inhabitants (earthlings, that's us!) So let 's go to Cusco, Peru! But, I need a little help to get there, so this is where you come in!


FOCUS: natural, organic, and traditional Peruvian application fashion and textiles


CHALLENGE: funding travel expenses, materials for courses, and course fees


GOAL: to learn effective and ecological dyeing techniques and indigenous weaving practices through academic courses and cultural emersion


The South American Andes is full of rich culture, unique trades, and amazing skills. Organic alpaca farming and textiles made from alpaca wool are a huge part of both the Peruvian culture and the country's economy. I want to learn from those who have the much needed sensitivity to avoiding a negative human impact on the planet and apply their techniques to my design practices as I pursue my career in fashion design. I will also be capturing the all the details along the way with my cameras and my handy dandy notebook!
