The Tyler Jarrell Scholarship
Donation protected
As you may know, on July 26, 2017, Tyler Jarrell tragically passed away while attending the Ohio State Fair.
Tyler and I met in 2013 when we started participating in the Columbus Police Explorer program. We trained together every week at the Columbus Police Academy and volunteered together for countless community outreach events. Tyler was selfless. You could always count on him to be willing to share both his time, and his resources. If someone needed it, Tyler would be willing to give the shirt off of his back to anyone. For me, Tyler was always willing to pitch in a few dollars and grab me a snack before meetings at the academy since he knew I was always hungry and never carried cash. I would say to him "I'll pay you back next meeting" and the next meeting would come and he would tease me by saying, "Slane, I'm never going to get that money back, am I?" I would tell him that he would get his money back one day. Tyler was the type of person who was truly willing to give you everything he had. I have many wonderful memories that I shared with Tyler, but I feel his legacy deserves to live on. While navigating though my grief, I was trying to think of ways to honor Tyler's memory. I decided I wanted to start a scholarship in Tyler's name to continue his legacy of selfless giving and, as Tyler said in a speech at the academy, "to push people to be the best that they can be". The Tyler Jarrell Scholarship will be for students who wish to study criminal justice in the state of Ohio. Although my friend is gone, Tyler walks beside us every day to support us, guide us, and to lift us when we have fallen. Thank you for your time and for considering giving a donation to TheTyler Jarrell Scholarship Fund.
God bless you all,
Derek Slane
