My 17 year old son, Tyler Madison Mulligan, was murdered just days before Christmas on the afternoon of Saturday December 22, 2018 at approximately 1:30 PM. Tyler was  attempting to defend his mother, Shronda Candy Lyons, an Office Manager of a Dental Office, from her boyfriend, during a Domestic Violence encounter that played out in the interior of her parked SUV. Shronda was also murdered before her boyfriend took his own life in what Police called a “Murder Suicide”.

This entire event played out at the corner of 10th and French in North Philadelphia just off of the campus of Temple University. Police were called to the intersection for multiple gunshots in the area.

Unfortunately I was informed by the 5 o’clock news of this tragedy instantly recognizing the vehicle on TV.  This event devastated my family. Shronda was the biological Mother to another one of my sons who is 19 and will be leaving for college soon and stepmother to my older son for a long period of time while we were together.

I still have not been able to shed more than two tears yet. It is all still too fresh to me and the anger is still the most prominent feeling I have to date. The pain I feel personally is deeper than can be intellectually explained. There are just no words that can bring this to anyone’s understanding. This goes against the natural order of life. A parent is not supposed to out live their child. It feels as though a piece of you has been torn away and you are steadily trying over and over again to put it back but it is just not possible.

I prayed long nights while not being able to sleep. Talked to God looking for comfort and how to turn this tragic situation to something positive. Thinking of my surviving son now without his baby brother and mother along with the pain of my other children, I decided that I will dedicate the rest of my life to helping others who have suffered the same as my family.

The goal is to help other children who have lost a parent or parents due to such violent encounters and speak about the outcome domestic violence has on surviving children and other family members. We as a society can not afford to turn a blind eye to any form of domestic violence when such things take place no matter how small they may seem to be. A threat, a small push or shove, anything that may be the beginning to a growing situation that can escalate to the unthinkable.

Imagine being a parent less child not having anyone in your corner when you need help reaching college to further your education and keep your life on track trying to beat the odds that are stacked so high against one. The physical and mental strain can be unbearable. Now imagine, it’s time to turn a negative to something positive!

We are a Domestic Non Profit Corporation 5306. We are raising funds so that we can go out into the community to speak about Domestic Violence and the effect on children. We will also award five $5,000.00 scholarships to be awarded to adolescent victims who have lost a parent to domestic violence.
