For those of you who know them, you know that the Beckett family is one of the strongest, most amazing families on the planet. They have certainly faced their share of challenges over the years. And yet, despite it all, they have the biggest hearts and the most amazing and resilient spirits.
Andy and Alicia’s youngest son, Carson, was diagnosed with an auto immune disease when he was 5 years old due to complications related to strep throat. He has had to do multiple rounds of chemo, every year since, and likely for the rest of his life. They have spent countless hours at the Children’s Hospital over the years, tending to Carson’s medical needs. They have watched him go through health and medical trauma that no child should ever be exposed to. Through it all, they have maintained positive attitudes and unwavering faith.
In 2006, Alicia was diagnosed with Lupus. On top of taking care of Carson and his medical situation, she now had her own to face. In the years since Alicia’s diagnosis, she has had multiple surgeries for varying health issues, most related to the Lupus. In the last year, after a gall bladder surgery, Alicia noticed that she was having difficulty breathing. She sought treatment from her doctor (a well-known and respected Rheumatologist at UCLA) only to discover that the Lupus was now attacking her lungs. She has recently been diagnosed with interstitial lung disease, an incurable disease that now has her on oxygen 24/7, and has limited her normal daily activities to a bare minimum. Even though she has been given a timeline on life, Alicia is strong, and if we know her, we know she will prove these doctors wrong!
The abundance of these medical nightmares over the years has caused a horrific financial burden on the Beckett family. Alicia is under the care of a very well respected pulmonary specialist at UCLA and makes trips down there multiple times a month. Throw in the cost of gas and lodging on top of years of medical bills, medications, supplies, treatments and more ... it has added up. And it has become insurmountable for them to have to face this burden on their own.
Somehow, through it all, Alicia maintains her unbreakable spirit and lives each day with a smile on her face. I am uncertain if she realizes just how many people she inspires day in and day out. With their (stubborn/semi-hesitant) permission, I am reaching out to those who know and love them to ask for support for the Beckett family. They have given so much to so many; it’s our turn to give back to them in their time of need.
