Hey there!
This summer the two of us (Lane and Joel) are going to take on the Transamerica ride from Richmond, VA to Astoria, OR for the purpose of raising funds for the Americans with Diabetes Association. The trip will be a little more than 4,200 miles, and we’re hoping to go with minimal support.
We’ve started this Gofundme page to help with the costs of biking and dealing with Type 1 diabetes. Joel was diagnosed with the disease when he was 10 years old and has been an advocate in the community since; he is currently a counselor at Camp Needlepoint in Hudson, WI. Our goal is to really show kids who are affected by diabetes that they can achieve whatever they put their mind to, no matter how miraculous the feat.
We’ve been preparing for our ride but need to find a way to keep Joel’s insulin cold as well as other diabetic supplies in good condition so he’s able to complete the ride. We’re looking to purchase a battery bank and small refrigeration system in order to keep him supplied and riding with comfort.
While this is a lifelong dream, the awareness brought to the American Diabetes Association by our ride will hopefully spark more investment in discovering a cure that affects so many American diabetics and their families.
Any donation will help us achieve this goal, and set up some encouragement for anyone with a disease or ailment that might make endeavors challenging for them.
If you are interested in riding a portion of the ride (whether it is in person or virtually) sign up to be a part of our team: The Two Wheel Site Cyclers on the ADA website. We would love to have you share in the journey!
