Two Nurses, One Unbelievable Gift of Life.
Sometimes life brings people together in ways we could never plan.
Tiffany Taylor is a dedicated nurse, educator at Rappahannock Community College (RCC), and clinician at Sentara’s anticoagulation clinic. For over a decade, Tiffany has battled severe chronic illness—diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) in 2013 and Crohn’s disease in 2015. Over the last several years, her health has steadily declined, leaving her in urgent need of a life-saving liver transplant. Tiffany is a devoted wife to her husband DJ of 11 years, a loving mom to her son Liam and bonus daughter Nyah, and a proud pet parent to their dog, Plato.
When DJ posted a heartfelt plea online asking if anyone would consider testing to be a living donor, he was praying for a miracle. Unbeknownst to them, the answer to that prayer was closer than they imagined.
Meaghan Koehler is a Registered Nurse, a devoted wife to her husband Derek Koehler, and a loving mother. Years ago, Meaghan attended RCC for her nursing degree, where Tiffany was one of her instructors. When Meaghan saw DJ’s post, she couldn’t stop thinking about Tiffany’s children and the prospect of a mother missing out on priceless moments with her family. Driven by faith and deep compassion, Meaghan quietly stepped forward to begin the rigorous testing process to become a living liver donor.
After extensive evaluations and medical clearances, the incredible news came through: Meaghan is a match.
The Road Ahead & How You Can Help
On October 8th, Tiffany and Meaghan will undergo major surgery. Meaghan will donate a portion of her liver to Tiffany—a remarkable, selfless gift that will allow Tiffany’s liver to regenerate and give her a second chance at a healthy life with her family.
While this is a story of incredible hope, both women and their families face a long and challenging recovery.
6+ Weeks Out of Work: Both Meaghan and Tiffany will be completely out of work for a minimum of six weeks—and potentially longer depending on healing and complications.
Financial Burden: Missing over a month and a half of income creates immense financial stress for both families, on top of travel, medical, and everyday household costs required during major surgery recovery.
Care & Family Support: Managing recovery with young children at home requires extra resources and community support for Derek, DJ, and both households.
Neither Tiffany nor Meaghan requested this fundraiser. Both are caregivers by nature—women who spend their lives looking after others rather than asking for help themselves. But as their family, friends, and community, we know that carrying this burden together is the greatest gift we can offer them.
In Meaghan’s Own Words
"My name is Meaghan and somewhere along the way, Tiffany's story became part of mine. I am a wife, a mom, a registered nurse, and a woman of faith. Caring for people has always been a big part of who I am, but becoming a liver donor is different from anything I have ever done before.
When I heard that Tiffany needed a liver transplant, I couldn't stop thinking about what that really meant—not just for her, but for her children and the people that love her. As a mom myself, that is the part that stayed with me. Her kids need their mom. They need more birthdays with her. More Christmas mornings. More family dinners, school events, hugs, laughter, vacations, arguments, milestones and completely ordinary days that we sometimes don't realize are precious until there is a possibility of losing them.
When I realized that I might be able to give Tiffany some of that time, I knew I needed to find out if I could help. So I began the process of becoming her living liver donor. There have been appointments, testing, questions, planning, nerves, and plenty of emotions along the way. I know this is a major surgery, and I don't pretend that I'm completely fearless about it. I have my own husband, children, family, career, and life waiting for me on the other side of surgery, too.
But my faith has carried me throughout this journey. I believe God gives us opportunities to love people in ways we could never have planned for ourselves. Sometimes we get the chance to be an answer to a prayer we may not have even heard someone praying. And somehow, our two stories crossed at exactly the right time.
The amazing thing about living liver donation is that my liver will regenerate. I can give a portion of mine, recover, and hopefully watch Tiffany get the opportunity to live a fuller life with hers. I am not doing this because I think I'm a hero. I'm doing this because I'm a mom who looked at another mom and thought, if I have the ability to help give her more time with her children, how could I not try.
This journey belongs to both of us now—two women, two families, and one pretty incredible little piece of liver connecting our stories. And if everything goes according to plan, someday the scars we both carry will tell the same story: She needed more time. I had something I could give. And by the grace of God, I got to give it to her."
How You Can Support
Funds raised through this campaign will be split between both families to help cover:
Lost household income and essential bills during their multi-week medical leaves.
Travel, lodging, and medical out-of-pocket recovery expenses.
Meals and household support for both families while Meaghan and Tiffany heal.
I will be distributing the funds to Meaghan and Tiffany. If you are unable to donate financially, your prayers, positive thoughts, and shares of this campaign mean the world to both families.
Thank you for surrounding Tiffany, DJ, Meaghan, Derek, and their loved ones with love, strength, and grace as October 8th approaches!
