Twin Cities Worker Solidarity Mural

Join the struggle for low-wage worker justice and help us create the Twin Cities Worker Solidarity Mural!

My name is Aaron Johnson-Ortiz, and I am a socially engaged artist with a background in community and labor organizing. This year I am working with the Minneapolis workers' center Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha (CTUL), and together we will create a mural on the outside of their new building.

Community members, activists, low-wage workers, and artists will be joining me to produce this one-of-a-kind art project. It will honor the struggle of janitors, fast-food workers, construction workers, and others who are currently fighting for a $15 minimum wage, workplace safety, an end to wage theft, equal pay for equal work, and a thriving economy that works for all!

Help us make that vision a reality with a financial contribution, and join us this summer to paint our mural!

The mural will be created at 3715 S Chicago Ave, Minneapolis, CTUL's new building. I am currently designing the mural based on community input, the vision of workers, and, with your help and that of our community, we will paint it together this summer. Please message me with any ideas, and/or if you want to volunteer with painting, fundraising, or event planning.

I have been partnering with CTUL for some time, and I have produced a variety of poster and social media materials for them... below is some of this work:

You might be wondering.... What is a workers' center??

Well, workers' centers are non-profit organizations that focus on deep leadership development with low-wage workers, providing workers with the knowledge and tools to organize for better wages and working conditions in their workplaces. Workers' centers often help workers organize, and if those workers want to, they can seek union recognition.

The image below was part of a campaign to demand that Kohl's implement a Responsible Contractor Policy, so that subcontracted janitors could earn a living wage.

Below are a Spanish and an English version of my "Victory/Victoria" poster, which celebrated CTUL's successful campaign to organize workers across the retail janitor industry in the Twin Cities metro area.

Your donations will be sent straight to CTUL, and they will work with me to pay labor and materials costs.

This online campaign is part of CTUL's larger "Raise Worker Voices Campaign," a $1.65 million fundraising drive, with which we hope to take CTUL's organizing to the next level. This includes paying off the new building and establishing an arts space within the building, as well as developing the capacity of the organization to fight for fair wages, fair working conditions, and a voice in the workplace for all workers in the Twin Cities metro area.

We estimate the arts projects alone will cost about $150,000.  These projects include the mural, a labor-themed art show and new gallery space, the creation of puppets and other protest parapharnelia, and other programs to support local activist artists.  In addition to this online fundraising drive, we are writing grants, seeking sponsorships, organizing fundraising events, etc.

If we exceed the online fundraising goal, we will dedicate any additional funds to those other ongoing art projects within and outside the building.
