Alright team. It's time to rally again. We initially started this GoFundMe 20 months ago to help Sarah pay her medical bills as she battled Stage 3b Colon Cancer. She was diagnosed at age 27 one month after losing her dad to lung cancer. She fought it with grace and without complaint. She continued to work in between chemo treatments, again, without complaint. She smiled and laughed through most of it. She beat it once. Unfortunately, last year, after developing lower abdominal pain that intensified, an ultrasound and biopsy revealed a 15 cm mass growing near her ovary. She was diagnosed once again with colon cancer. She beat it twice.
A few months ago, Sarah once again was diagnosed with colon cancer after a routine scan, this time stage 4. Sarah has been recommended for HIPEC , a surgery that involves removing tumors and then washing the abdominal cavity with a heavy dose of chemo. This surgery is difficult, invasive, and has a lengthy recovery period. Sarah's insurance currently is denying coverage of the surgery because they deem it "not medically necessary". She and her surgeons and oncologists are appealing this. Regardless, this will be expensive, and the lengthy recovery will impact Sarah's ability to work for some time. Help is going to be needed for Sarah to beat it a third time.
Through it all, this Blue Ridge mountain girl has blessed us with her comedic wit, natural beauty, unwavering friendship, selflessness, and above all, grace, especially under pressure. She's become an advocate for colorectal cancer awareness and screening. She’ll tell you she’s fine. She’ll show you she’s okay without asking for much, especially this attention, which is precisely why we’re doing this for her. Let's help her focus all of her energy on healing by alleviating the stress of unexpected medical bills. Let's give her a chance to catch up and breath and get well.
