Adopt a Kidney Patient in Cameroon

Donation protected
Hello friends,
My name is Rosemary Atanga and I am a resident of Maryland, a mother, wife and a volunteer and founder of the Atanga Kidney Foundation.
I grew up in Cameroon, central Africa and right from a young age, I always loved to help/volunteer and I guess this was as a result of my parents who got me involved in many youth activities through my church to keep me busy and also to make good use of my time.

On September 16th 1998, I made a life-saving decision to donate one of my kidneys. While this was quite a humbling experience for me, I cannot ignore the plight of kidney (renal) disease patients, especially in Cameroon and other parts of Africa. Lack of funds, inadequate access to dialysis facilities, shortage of dialysis supplies, shortage of manpower and inadequate training of dialysis technicians, are just a few of the numerous problems faced by End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients. While ESRD patients live a near normal life in developed countries, most patients back in Cameroon live in fear and anxiety, which is unacceptable.
The Mission of the AKF is to improve the quality of life of ESRD patients by assistance with treatment, create  awareness of kidney disease and organ donation, and provide education on kidney disease prevention.
The average cost of dialysis to a patient in Cameroon is approximately 600,000 frs CFA/year (equivalent to ~ $1200.00/year), while according to the World Bank, the Gross National Income per person in Cameroon is $1,350.00. It is no news that many people skip dialysis because they are unable to pay despite the fact that it is being subsidized by the government. There has been a growing number of deaths from renal failure.

We will be organizing a fundraising gala on September 19th 2015 to raise funds to assist ESRD patients and patients who suffer from reversible acute kidney failure with cost of treatment, based on their family's size and need.
The foundation recently assisted 18 patients in Bamenda who had not been to dialysis for over 2 weeks because the center was completely out of supply. Sadly, two deaths occurred from this crisis.

The AKF believes that with your help, the mission of the foundation as stated above, will be accomplished. This foundation hopes to spread to other parts of Africa and our community in the US. I will be very honored by your presence and donation. In the event that you are unable to attend, your kind donation will be highly appreciated.
