- Hi my name is Starla, and I’m fundraising for my daughter Samerah. Before April 18th she was a typical 17yr old getting ready to complete her junior year, participate in her last dance competition and recital at the studio she attends, and prepare for a summer of working to save money for a car. All of that changed April 18th when I noticed her eyes were yellow. I took her to the hospital where she was admitted because her liver enzymes were elevated. We spent four days in this hospital before being transferred to another children’s hospital that has a hepatology team. After being at this hospital for a week her labs continued to decline. The Dr’s decided to add her to transplant list on a Tuesday and by Thursday the decline was even more rapid. There were points where she was even unresponsive. Samerah got a donor that Friday and a liver transplant Saturday April 30. We stayed in the hospital another week until being discharged on May 10th. Now that we’re home there are Dr’s visits and labs 3 days a week. Samerah has a lot to adjust to. Taking meds daily the rest of her life, getting labs, and many other things. All this time I haven’t been back to work. I’m the provider for my household. With the bills still coming in and me wanting to get her life as back to normal as possible we need help. Samerah preparing to go off to college out of state after her senior I anticipate there will be expenses that will come up where I need to be there for her. In the meantime she can’t be around a crowd of people 3 months after transplant and also no driving for a month which means no school, work, and basically not the summer she had planned. I have had to be out of work to get her to these appointments. Hopefully by August the visits will slow down and I can go back even if it just part time for awhile. Anything that you can do to help no matter how small you think it may be would be appreciated.
