Hello,
My name is Samantha, and I am reaching out for support during a tough time.
It has been very hard for me to ask for help in the past, but I am burnt out from managing things on my own for so long. Many people in my network are in similar situations--working educators, community organizers, and artists, first-gen college grads without access to generation wealth, and people who also struggle with chronic illness and/or disability--so I am reaching out for broader support.
I have been teaching at the elementary and middle school level for 8 years and am no longer able to sustain the demands of teaching full-time while prioritizing my health. I have the most expensive health insurance plan my work offers and have still spent over $5,000 in medical bills in less than a year, without fully resolving any of my health issues and concerns. I pay $1600/mo for rent, and a move would be very challenging at this time. I have no savings and am making payments on student loans.
My health will likely require me to take medical leave, all or some of which may not be paid. It is also possible that I could lose my health insurance before I am able to work another job that will provide benefits. I am asking for support so that I can afford to rest while searching for more sustainable alternatives to full-time teaching.
Sincerely,
Samantha
