Turtles are keystone species- where entire food webs are dependent on them. They are super agents of biodiversity - they help keep our water clean for drinking and swimming, and they spread seeds to grow new wetland habitats for fish and wildlife....and yet, it takes about 60 years to replace just one!
Turtle Crossing Guard volunteers will be monitoring turtles in high mortality sites on roads in Haliburton and Peterborough Counties, and in partnership with the municipalities. But to ensure that turtles are not injured and volunteers can get to them without causing havoc on roads, we are installing temporary silt fencing at these sites- so that volunteers can simply pick up the turtle and carry them across the road when it is safe to do so. Therefore we need some help!
We are hoping to raise enough money to purchase:
1. Temporary silt fencing to help reduce road injuries and mortality for turtles
2. High viz signs and vests for volunteers at these sites
3. To purchase turtle crossing signs at key sites in the region.
These are anticipated to cost at least $2000.00 per county (for Haliburton and Peterborough).
Any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us.
