Hola mi nombre es Santiago Sandoval y soy un niño Uruguayo de poco más de 3 años, mis padres son Venezolanos (Alejandro y Greosmary), en 2015 llegaron a este hermoso país en busca de un mejor futuro, ya que en Venezuela la situación es bastante difícil y tuvieron que emigrar.
Yo nací de 26 semanas (6 meses). Siendo prematuro extremo con apenas 940 gramos, tuve muchas complicaciones graves en los primeros días de mi vida; tales como una perforación de intestino lo que ocasionó una infección generalizada, tuve que recibir 4 transfusiones de sangre y otros más de plasma además.
Al ser tan pequeño, dependí mucho de un soporte de oxígeno porque no era capaz de respirar al 100% por mí solo; esto causó daños graves en mis ojos, lo que se conoce como Retinopatía del Prematuro (ROP), también al estar entubado tanto tiempo y además de que no logré prenderme mucho del pecho de mi madre por una intolerancia a la lactosa, perdí la capacidad de comer por mí mismo, esto me generó un trastorno deglutorio, lo cual me impide hasta la fecha comer como cualquier niño. Además de esto, sufrí hasta hace poco de hipotonía muscular y no era capaz de mantenerme en pie, o incluso tener la postura cervical adecuada, con mucha fisioterapia, dedicación de mis padres y mi fisioterapeuta hoy en día ya lo superé.
Soy incapaz de ver porque la Retinopatía que sufro, es estadio IV, que impidió la formación correcta de mis retinas. Actualmente voy a la Fundación Braille de Uruguay y estoy aprendiendo a ver y conocer el mundo con mis manitos.
Mi sueño es poder ir junto con mis padres, el próximo año a Beijing-China, para que me realicen un tratamiento innovador que consiste en un trasplante de células madres, en el Wu Center Medical, con el cual se podrá regenerar mis retinas para lograr mejorar mi calidad de vida al poder ver, además este tratamiento me ayudará a mejorar mi capacidad neurológica en cuanto a mi trastorno deglutorio.
Mis padres y yo necesitamos US$ 30.000 pagar el tratamiento que dura 2 semanas en China y para luego seguir el tratamiento en Uruguay por 6 meses más.

Being extremely premature with a weight of just 940 grams (about 2 pounds) , I had many serious complications on the first days of my life; such as a bowel perforation which caused a generalized infection, I had to receive 4 blood transfusions and other more transfusions of plasma.
Being so small, I relied heavily on an oxygen support, because I was not able to breathe 100% by myself; This caused serious damage to my eyes, what is known as Retinopathy of Premature (ROP), also being intubated for so long and in addition to that I did not manage to catch much of my mother's breast due to a lactose intolerance, I lost the ability to eat by myself, this caused me a swallowing disorder, which prevents me from eating like any other child. In addition to this, I suffered muscle hypotonia and was not able to stand up, or even have adequate cervical posture, with a lot of physiotherapy, dedication of my parents and my physiotherapist; today I already overcame it.
I cannot see because the Retinopathy that I suffer is stage IV, which prevented the correct formation of my retinas. I am currently going to the Braille Foundation of Uruguay and I am learning to see and know the world with my hands.
My dream is to be able to go to Beijing-China next year with my parents, so that they can carry out an innovative treatment consisting of a stem cell transplant, at the Wu Center Medical, with which my retinas can be regenerated and I will be able to see, and achieve an improvement of my life quality, this treatment will also help me improve my neurological capacity in terms of my swallowing disorder.
