On August 27, 2021, we heard the most paralyzing news a wife and family members could ever hear “he will be gone in less than 10 minutes.” As my brother-in-law lay intubated with a tube in his throat and IVs in his neck and arms, I watched his wife (my sister) standing over him praying the Lord’s prayer as my heart sank because I knew I would never be able to heal her pain and sorrow. It was extremly difficult to see my sister and her husband, who had been on their life journey together for more than 30 years, come to a tragic end. She whispered to him, “I love you, Dee.” She said, “I’m here!” and kissed him, while we cautiously listened to the beeps and low noises of the machines hooked to his body. I stood by my sister's side as she yelled and screamed, hoping to awaken her road dog, her hubby, her ride or die. We watched the doctors and nurses rush in to perform CPR because he went into cardiac arrest; not once, or twice, but at least four times. Amidst the tears, she told me they had planned a trip to Yosemite next April to celebrate his birthday, but sadly I knew that those plans would never come to fruition. I left my sister's side for just a moment to console my nephew, who was staring down at Dee because the anguish on his face said it all. I held my nephew and told him it was ok for him to release the pain. We found ourselves watching Dee's stomach rise and fall, then noticed the gurgling noise as it began to fade. As the doctor and nurses checked Dee's vital signs, our worst nightmare became our reality…..In a pain gripping instant, Dee was gone and the doctor called out his departure at 8:15pm. We were devastated to say the least. My sister's pain was unbearable and she was inconsolable because the love of her life, her life partner, her bestfriend, was no longer living on this earth anymore and that his suffering had come to an end.
Dee was truly loved by everyone he came across. He was always ready to travel and was fully involved in the planning phase. Dee was a great cook, he enjoyed eating just as much as cooking. Everyone knew that if he was cooking, they were more than welcome to come over to the house to eat. Their house was known as the gathering spot. Dee was also a die hard Lakers fan and he liked the Raiders.
My sister and nephew are still dealing with the effects from covid-19 and they would greatly appreciate any support during this difficult time. Their healing has been very slow due to other health issues. We are asking for support so that they don't have to worry about the financial burden that this tragic and unforeseen situation caused, which has placed a huge strain on her family.
