Turn cogs for dementia for Alzheimer's Research UK
Who are we …….
Katie and Colin
Our cycling trip April 2022-2023 UK to Singapore
What do we do ……
We Ride ….
Our aim is to cycle an average of 50 miles per day, we hope to cover 10, 000 + miles on the bike, there will be times when a ferry or flight is required.
We …. Eat, we camp
We are setting ourselves a daily spending budget, we plan to camp for the most part, or we are lucky enough to have generosity from others for a nights stay.
We …. Repeat
We want to achieve all of this within 1 year.
Charity
We have chosen a charity for the trip, which is helping toward research for dementia.
Dementia is the umbrella term
For many different disorders that affect cognitive function. 1 in 3 people will get dementia. There is no cure.
As a nurse predominantly from an acute background of nursing, something that always touch’s part of me is looking after those patients with dementia and the affects the disease has on their health and well-being. Not only that, it is seeing the heartbreak the disease has on their families, having to see someone they love having faded away.
So when we looked at doing the cycling trip we discussed several charities and the Alzheimer’s research was the one at the forefront.
We are going to turn those cogs for dementia. This is our logo for the trip. We would be extremely grateful to achieve our aim of raising a £1 per mile (£10,000).
So why a cycle trip……
Me being a complete novice at the start of 2021 to biking and my partner having always rode bikes but has never done any kind of challenge, we have both committed fully to this. We are excited for the experiences and even those down days we know we will have.
We have put a lot of planning and preparation into this trip. Although we have had our reservations about safety and other issues, We decided that we are both not getting any younger and how life can throw anything at you that you never know is coming, we felt the time is right.
We aim to be self sufficient and have ensured in so far that everything and every eventuality is taken care of home and away.
Why cycling …..
Cycling is known to be one of the best forms of exercise. However, Its not just not about the pros of it burning fat, and it helping to build muscle, the best part is about the adventure of riding around outdoors, we found it provides great relief from both physical and mental exhaustion, and we wanted to experience places that you may never get to see in car. Cycling to our destination each day we hope will create the best kind of memories.
We are excited about the part of the trip that will bring about meeting people, we have read and researched our destinations and look forward to experiencing fascinating foreign cultures.
If you wish to help us along the way either donating to our chosen charity or offering us your garden to pitch up our tent in ……. all would be graciously received
