Turkish author seeking support for a new project in Berlin

Growing up, bored children always find a way to entertain themselves. My treehouse to hide from the rural darkness of my childhood was literature. It went on to define the rest of my life as well.

After 20 years, working as an openly gay man at every level and facing every possible obstacle, I decided to leave print media completely. It took me 20 years to see that writing had no future in Turkey, which had been no less tumultuous than my media career during those 20 years. Nevertheless, I wanted to give writing one last chance as I tried to realise a dream.

I wrote my novel Deniz Ne Kadar Güzel in two years, weaving its intrigue knot by knot throughout countless nights. After came the considerable wait for it to be published, because Turkey obviously... This was the challenge of the first novel: waiting. In the end, I came to understand the wait was well worth it when the novel was finally published in 2021. Currently the fifth print is on the shelves. It became the first book from Turkey to be selected for the Shoot The Book! section of Cannes Film Festival, 2023. English language rights were acquired by New York based Soho Press the same year and the translation has been completed, waiting to go to press.

It was decided: writing that I was about to quit for good, was indeed what I would do for the rest of my life. Now onto the second novel! Mentally drafted many stories but none really satisfied me. The concept of 'curse of the second novel' has even been a subject for academic theses. Of course I had to have one too!

Inspiration did come in 2022, during a visit to Berlin, in the dark room of a club. I had that art instance spark in the dark. I knew what I had to write and the rough story draft materialized within a few days. It was like magic.

But this novel had its own challenge too: this story could only be written in Berlin. I took a leap of faith and applied for the German freelance artist visa. After a one and a half year struggle the visa came through.

Now I have the Berlin chapter ahead of me. Now awaits a process which I do not know how to handle really. Because I am just a writer, who, up to this point, has earned a modest living only writing and has been as devastated as every other member of his generation by Turkey's political and economical climate, now chasing after a story, a writer with a great idea yet no money.

If you would support me and my plan to write this novel over an eight month period in Berlin, both I and my characters, master, slave and of course the killer, all waiting for me there, to be written, will forever be grateful to you.

I do believe books thrive with the readers. My first novel has shown me this. So I will be sending a signed first print of the new novel to everyone who will be making it happen with their support.

Türk yazar Berlin’deki yeni projesi için destek arıyor

Büyürken canları çok sıkılan çocuklar kendilerini eğlendirmenin yolunu mutlaka bulur. Benim taşra karanlığında saklandığım fanus edebiyattı. Hayatımın ilerleyen yıllarını da belirleyen bu oldu.

20 yıla yakın bir süre açık eşcinsel biri olarak Türk medyasında her konumda çalıştıktan ve her türlü zorlukla karşılaştıktan sonra medyayı bırakmaya karar verdim. En az medya kariyerim gibi son 20 yılı epey çalkantılı geçmiş Türkiye’de yazarlığın geleceği olmadığını 20 yılda anlamıştım.

Ama yazarlığa son bir şans vermeyi, bir hayalimi de denemek istiyordum. Geceler boyu uğraşıp entrikasını ilmek ilmek ördüğüm romanım Deniz Ne Kadar Güzel’i iki senede yazdım. Ve sonra epey uzun bir süre basılmasını bekledim. Çünkü Türkiye!

İlk romanımın challenge’ı buydu: Beklemek. Beklemeye değdiğini roman sonunda 2021’de yayınlandığında anladım. Şu an güncel olarak beşinci baskısı satıyor. 2023 Cannes Film Festivali’nin Shoot the Book! bölümüne seçilen Türkiyeli ilk kitap oldu. İngilizce hakları NewYork merkezli Soho Press yayınları tarafından satın alındı.

Ve bırakmayı düşündüğüm yazarlığı hayatımın sonuna kadar yapmaya karar verdim. Sırada ikinci roman vardı. Pek çok hikaye düşündüm ve aslında hiçbiri beni tatmin etmedi. Çünkü ‘Curse of the Second Novel’ diye akademik tezlere konu olmuş bir kavram vardır. Tabii ki yaşandı.

Bana ilham 2022 yılında Berlin’e yaptığım bir seyahatte, bir kulübün dark room’unda geldi. Ve o ‘sanat anı’ denilen şey gerçekleşti. Ne yazmam gerektiğini anladım ve romanın kaba kurgusu bir kaç gün içinde belirdi. Sihir gibi bir şeydi.

Ama bu romanın önünde de tıpkı ilki gibi bir challenge vardı. Bu hikaye dünyada sadece Berlin’de yaşayarak yazılabilirdi. Gözümü karartıp, Almanya Serbest Sanatçı Vize’sine başvurdum. Ve bir buçuk yılık uğraşın ardından vizem çıktı.

Şimdi önümde Berlin bölümü var. Nasıl olacağını asla bilemediğim bir süreç. Çünkü ben hayatı boyunca sadece yazarlık yaparak geçinmiş, Türkiye’nin politik ve ekonomik durumu kuşağının tüm mensupları gibi onu da mahvetmiş, bir hikayenin peşine takılmış, harika bir fikri olan ama parası olmayan bir yazarım.

Bu romanı Berlin’de planladığım sekiz ayda yazmam için beni desteklerseniz hem ben, hem de yazılmak için beni orada bekleyen karakterlerim master, slave ve elbette katil size müteşekkir olacak.

Kitapların okurlarıyla büyüdüğüne inanıyorum. İlk romanım bana bunu gösterdi. O yüzden bir projeyi önceden destekleyip bu romanın yazılmasını sağlayacak herkese basıldığında birinci baskısını imzalı göndereceğim.
