On election day morning, Turkey was rushed into the SF SPCA emergency room for a surgery to remove a tumor and save his life. He had been off for a while, but this came as a major surprise which we were not ready for, emotionally and financially. We know Turkey has a lot of love out there and that's why we're reaching out—to ask for help in covering these unexpected bills in this unexpected time.

The Story
On Tuesday morning, we woke up as usual and got ready to take Turkey for a walk. Suddenly, in the kitchen, he turned into a deer on ice—his legs started to give out  and he collapsed to the floor. We thought "maybe he just really has to pee?" and rushed outside. He began to stumble as he walked to the park. When he collapsed again, we knew something was really wrong. Kendall ran for the car and I carried Turkey into the back seat.

When we got the the first ER, we were told they were at capacity and we'd have to try other vets—not only in SF, but possibly as far as Redwood City. Luckily the Mission SPCA was open and willing to see us. We carried Turkey from the car to the second floor and placed him into the arms of a waiting nurse. They took him to the back to run tests and said they would call us when they had some information. We walked outside and moments later, the doctor called and wanted to speak with us in person. We knew this wasn't good.

We were taken into a room and told Turkey has a tumor the size of a softball in his belly—and it's bleeding. He was extremely anemic from the internal bleeding and would need an emergency surgery. But if they found more tumors when they open him up, then it would be a much harder conversation.

Of course we agreed to everything and the doctor walked out. And then we cried. We cried uncontrollably in that room. We weren't prepared for this and it was all  happening too fast.

But once we agreed to the surgery, they called in a specialist in to handle it and Turkey would be under the knife that afternoon. But he would still need a blood transfusion and the Mission campus didn't have Turkeys blood type on hand—but the Pac Heights location did. Only catch was, there was no one to make the run. No one except us. So we took a Styrofoam cooler from the Mission to Pac Heights and picked up a bag of dog blood for Turkeys surgery and drove it back.

After dropping the cooler off, we left the hospital with nothing to do but wait. We went home and cleaned the house. Voted. Went and cleaned the car. Got groceries to make Turkey his favorite food. All of this while we waited on results from our doctor.

The call came early in the evening and we were told everything went great. Turkey made it through without complication. The tumor was only connected to his spleen, so they removed it completely. It's getting sent to biopsy to see if it is cancer, but for now, he's safe. He spent the night in the hospital and early the next morning I was able to pick him up and bring him home.

We are so happy to still have him here with us, but we are still waiting on biopsy results and still have this medical bill to pay. We understand this year has been hard in so many ways on all of us, but if you can help at all we would appreciate it from the bottom or our hearts. Without Turkey, I'm not sure who I am. He's the namesake of the bread and has been on my side, literally, for the last 6 years. Everything I've done, he's been there. And I hope to keep it that way for as long as we can.

Thank you and we love you.
