My son, Owen, was born with Down Syndrome and every year we have to raise money to be able to send him to Adam's Camp. As it states in Adam's Camp own website "It is a non-profit organization founded in Colorado in 1986, providing a variety of intensive, personalized, and integrated therapeutic programs for children with special needs and their families as well as recreational programs providing fun, social connections and growth in independence for youth and young adults with special needs." http://adamscamp.org/about-us/
Every year that Owen is able to attend Adam's Camp he has been able to rise above more and more of the roadblocks in learning and socializing. It has helped us with teaching him how to walk without a walker that he had to use for a time. He has learned how to use an adaptive language I-pad that we had to raise money to obtain. Owen has also learned how to be a bit more independent.
The camp and lodging for the week long camp is between $5,100 and $5,500 and does not include the food needed for the week long stay. This year the week that Owen is to attend Adam's Camp is July 18-23, 2016 but we have to have the funds to cover it by June 15, 2016.
This camp means so much to not only Owen but the rest of our family because it helps teach him the essential skills to lead a long and successful life. This is hard enough for a person to do without the added stress of having a special need. Owen comes back from the camp each year with such a renewed outlook towards the tasks he has to complete in school and everyday life. Adam's Camp is able to assist Owen in making significant progress toward his individualized therapy goals which in turn prepare him for life outside of our home when he reaches the age that he can do that.
My family would be so appreciative of whatever can be given for this wonderful cause. We have found Adam's Camp to be one place that healing and hope are contagious and it uplifts our spirits to see Owen excelling so much in that setting.
