Hi, my name is Julie 

I am a visually impaired student attending San Francisco State University working on my graduate degree in special education. I plan to become a low vision specialist who works with blind and visually Impaired students so that they may access an equal education with their peers. 

Having been though a school system that was content to let students like myself remain uneducated and underserved, (to the point that I was almost illiterate by the time I reached middle school), I know how important it is to have an instructor who can provide tools, guidance and advocacy for their blind students. This is why i am so passionate about this career path. 

Fast forward to 2020 which has left many people without the means to cover even basic needs. It was difficult to justify paying school over paying rent. With the loss of one job and the drastic reduction of the other, I found myself having to make that choice this last fall.

My family is extremely low income and I am the only one who is currently working. Financial aid only helps with a small portion of tuition and programs that are set up to aid low income students are either unavailable or have already been used in other semesters. 

This fundraiser is to help cover the remaining tuition costs from the Fall 2020 semester so that I can continue my program. Because of the cyclical nature of the program, missing a semester would cause a significant delay while I wait for the particular course to be offered again. 

As I write this. It’s taking every ounce of strength I can muster to ask for help. But It’s abundantly clear that i can’t do this alone.
