To know Josh is to love him. He’s got a heart of gold, cares deeply for the less fortunate, and has the most creative ideas for every situation.
Josh also has quite a number of challenges that most of us don’t face. He struggles with severe ADHD which makes getting through simple tasks of a day unbelievably difficult. He lacks executive function in the brain which controls regulating emotions, paying attention, and completing the tasks he begins.
Allen and Marcia have explored numerous schooling options for Josh including a variety of public, private, and homeschooling options.
However, this summer, Josh was diagnosed with dyslexia in addition to all of the above challenges. Dyslexia makes it incredibly difficult to learn in a typical school environment.
Although they had known that Horizon Academy was the school in Kansas City that could address all of Josh’s needs, until his most recent diagnosis, they had not pursued it because the price of tuition is prohibitive. However, this summer, with the encouragement from their other kids, they started looking into what this school might be able to offer Josh.
Josh started 5 th grade at Horizon Academy this fall. Horizon teaches all the subjects using a method called Orton-Gillingham, the gold standard for students with dyslexia. Horizon also had numerous counselors and helpers on staff to meet and address Josh’s other needs. With each new challenge Josh has faced, the teachers
and staff at Horizon have cheerfully and confidently come up with plans not to accommodate Josh and push him along but to help Josh meet those challenges and rise above them. He is already making significant strides academically and socially. Early on in the year, Josh said “It’s like they're talking in a way my brain can finally understand.”
As you can imagine, this type of school is incredibly expensive. The total price for tuition without any assistance is $25,900 per year. Even with financial assistance, this is a challenge.
That’s where you can come in. We are hoping that through this go fund me, we can put together a gift for Allen and Marcia that will ease some of the price of Josh’s tuition. Any small amount will be incredibly helpful. We will present this to them on Christmas with a card including the names of the people who have donated.
