Hi, my name is Fronten'a Woodson, and I am the mother of one of the most amazing human beings I have ever known. Devin has been a joy to raise. He is so kind, loving, and thoughtful. He is a very spiritual young man and would do anything for anyone who needs it.
He has been an amazing student and equally amazing athlete. He was a star player for his high school and the same for his JC. Before Covid, he was attending South Western college, majoring in theatre arts. He had his debut role in his school's performance of Romeo and Juliet. He has always had a love for the arts and decided this was the path he wanted to take.
At graduation, he was offered many full scholarship offers to various Universities due to his performance on and off the field, but he declined, as none of the offers felt right to him.
He went on to join the football team at Southwestern College after the team's head coach, and assistant head coach made a personal visit to our home, wanting to secure a position for him on their team.
My hope was that he would attend Southwestern for a year, show his outstanding abilities within their organization, to help him secure a full scholarship to his University of choice.
He had made mention early on, that he was no longer in love with his sport, but I advised him to continue to pursue the path he was on, as it was a way for him to be able to attend the school of his choice, and not have finances pose an obstacle.
Well, one day he came to me and advised that he could no longer wanted be on the team at his school because he simply could no longer pursue this path for everyone around him.
Devin had a large support system including coaches, teachers, counselors, and family, really pushing him to pursue football because he was so good at it. It came naturally to him, and I just understood from watching him, that football would for sure take him far.
He sat me down, and said: "mom, I'm quitting the team. I no longer love football, and was only continuing on because everyone wanted it for me". I asked him if he didn't love it, then where was his heart currently, and he replied theatre.
he would watch movie reels of actors such as Will Smith, Samual L Jackson. He loves Kevin Harts story, and Tyler Perry's creativity, and told me he knows this is what he wants.
I told him, that I supported his decision, and will be at his performance on stage, just the same as I did for his performance on the field.
He applied to the school he wanted to get into more than anything and was accepted. The smile on his face and the spark in his eyes let me know, this was it for him. This is what he was created to do. And then I received my portion of the acceptance process, and boy of boy, is something.
Tuition for 1 year is $36,480.00. The school is just about 3 hours from home, so he would also need housing, with a cost of $12,375.00. And then there are the book fees. 1 year totals $1,320.00 for a grand total of $50,175.00.
He is a server at a local restaurant near our home, and he has been working, and saving all of his earnings and tips to earn money for school, but that will not come close to what he needs.
Covid hit everyone really hard, and it took a toll on our credit, so parent loans are not an option. And he applied for financial aid, but with all of that combined, it doesn't scratch the surface.
He plans to find a job near his school once he is all settled in, but he needs a boost to get him in and buy him a few months of tuition until he is able to find a job.
I would never think to fundraise for any reason really, but this is a deserving kid. He is going to do great things in life, and I would hate for him to be denied to amazing opportunity just because his parents can't afford to send him.
They gave me a deadline of 07-15-2021 to make a significant payment but did say that they would give us more time if we needed it. So anything you can invest into this amazing young man's future would be greatly appreciated.
