Tuition Aid for a Queer, International Student

hello <3 i am organizing this fundraiser to help a friend (who wishes to remain anonymous) fundraise tuition fees for the final semester of their undergrad. they are an international student in the health sciences program at simon fraser university (sfu). international tuition ends up being 3-5 times higher than domestic tuition, which makes it impossible to earn that much in a short period of time. they’re employed part-time and have had a job through out the last 4.5 years of their undergrad.

they’re coming out of a homophobic + transphobic family environment after they have been financially cut off by the family. this was due to a sudden and non-consensual disclosure of their sexuality by someone else to their parents. they will be entering the last semester of their undergraduate degree this month (Sept, 2023).

if they do not finish their final term of university, they won’t be able to receive their post-grad work permit. this forces them into the same family environment that puts their physical + mental wellbeing at risk!

we’re also figuring out some other resources for financial support by reaching out to people at sfu and it is taking much longer than expected. study permits have their limitations as you can’t work part-time if you’re not enrolled in school full-time during fall and winter terms. thus, waiting would harm their financial and immigration status.

donations will be directed towards their tuition (and rent & food if financial support kicks in): $11,000 CAD. for accountability, we’ll send the receipt of tuition & other expenses via “email-the-donors-option” in the next few weeks.
