Olemme Aboa, Turun Yliopiston vuoden 2022 iGEM-joukkue. Joukkue koostuu poikkitieteellisesti neljästätoista Turun Yliopiston biotekniikan, biologian, biolääketieteen ja biokemian opiskelijasta. IGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine; igem.org) on maailman suurin synteettisen biologian kilpailu, johon osallistuu vuosittain noin 7000 opiskelijaa 46 eri maasta. Kilpailun tarkoituksena on ratkaista jokin ajankohtainen, paikallinen ongelma synteettisen biologian keinoin.

Tämän vuoden aiheemme kohdistuu ruoantuotannon turvaamiseen. Olemme suunnitelleet tunnistusmenetelmän nimeltä CropFold, joka tunnistaa viljelykasvien taudinaiheuttajia. CropFoldin avulla tärkeistä viljelykasveista pystyttäisiin helposti paikan päällä tunnistamaan tietty taudinaiheuttaja jo ennen näkyviä oireita ja siten ehkäisemään laajoja satojen menetyksiä. Tällä hetkellä testaamme menetelmän toimivuutta Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) -taudinaiheuttajaan, joka infektoi eniten Suomessa viljeltyjä viljoja, kuten kauhraa, ohraa ja vehnää. Olemme suunnitelleet menetelmän niin, että vain pienillä muutoksilla sitä olisi mahdollista soveltaa myös muihin kasvitautien aiheuttajiin, myös muualla maailmassa. Olemme työskennelleet projektimme parissa alkuvuodesta saakka, ja saaneet sen hyvään pisteeseen. Koska olemme opiskelijalähtöinen joukkue, olemme itse vastuussa niin projektin suunnittelusta ja toteutuksesta, kuin rahoituksen hankkimisestakin. Olemme saaneet kerättyä varat kilpailu- ja tuomarointimaksuihin, mutta tarvitsemme vielä apua, jotta kaikki joukkueemme jäsenet pääsevät mukaan kilpailun päätöskonferenssiin. Päätöskonferenssin henkilökohtaiset pääsymaksut ovat noin 500 euroa per henkilö. Kyseiset maksut olemme saaneet kerättyä kokoon yliopistomme avustuksella tämän pienkeräyskampanjan aloittamisen jälkeen, mutta tarvitsemme vielä apua joukkueen jäsenten lentolippuihin sekä majoitukseen konferenssin ajaksi.

Keräyksen varat tullaan käyttämään seuraavasti: Keräysvarat käytetään ensisijaisesti vuoden 2022 Aboa iGEM-joukkueen joukkueen konferenssin osallistumismaksuihin 500e/hlö yht. 7000 e, joukkueen lentoihin Pariisiin konferenssia varten arviolta 2000 e tai joukkueen majoitukseen Pariisissa konferenssin ajan arviolta 500 e. Huom! Koska olemme saaneet tämän keräyksen aloittamisen jälkeen toista kautta avustusta ensimmäisen keräyskohteen täyttämiseksi, tämän keräyksen varat tullaan käyttämään joukkueen lentoihin sekä majoitukseen konferenssin ajan.

Mikäli keräysvaroja ei voida käyttää ensisijaisiin kohteisiin, ne käytetään vuoden 2023 Aboa iGEM-joukkueen projektin tuomarointimaksuun, alustavasti 3000 e ja konferenssiosallistumismaksuihin, alustavasti 500 e/hlö, 7000 e.

Hi!

We are the team Aboa from Turku, Finland, participating in the iGEM 2022 competition. We are a multidisciplinary team of students from the University of Turku, studying Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedicine, and Biochemistry. IGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine; igem.org) is the world’s largest synthetic biology competition with over 7000 participants yearly, from 46 different countries. The aim of the competition is to solve a local problem and have a positive impact on both the local and global communities.

Our team this year wanted to focus on improving food scarcity. We developed CropFold, which is an easy, on-site detection mechanism for plant pathogens. With the help of CropFold, farmers can detect pathogens from the crops even before any visible symptoms of a disease are shown. No special laboratory equipment or expertise is needed with CropFold. Currently, we are testing our method with Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV), which infects the most cultivated crops in Finland, such as wheat, barley, and oat. The mechanism behind CropFold is designed so that with only a few adjustments, other pathogens around the world can also be recognised with our method.

We have been working hard with our project since the beginning of the year, and gotten far with it. The project is student driven, and us students are responsible for designing, implementing and funding our project. With the help of our university and a few sponsors, we have been able to pay the initial competition fee and conference entrance tickets, but we still need help so all of our team members can attend the final conference.

The funds from this fundraiser will primarily be used for team Aboa 2022 team members entrance tickets to the conference 500 € each, in total 7000 €, the flights to Paris (around 2000 €) and accommodation in Paris during the conference (about 500 €). However, because since the start of this campaign we have gotten financial help from the university to cover the entrance tickets, the funds from this fundraiser will be used for the flights and accommodation during the conference.

If the funds will not be used for the primary subject, they will be used for the judging fee for team Aboa 2023 (around 3000 €), team Aboa members entrance tickets to the final conference (around 500 € per person, in total 7000 €).
