See, we had always known that it was going to be tough to conceive, but we never knew it would be THIS hard. Starting two months after getting married in 2012 I had been seen by multiple military doctors, poked, prodded and tested.
We have tried insemination multiple times and had been on the IVF list in San Diego. We were so hopeful that the insemination would work but they did not. After a year of waiting we were contacted by the Naval Medical Center to inform us it was our turn for IVF. However, we had just been stationed in Cape Cod and it would be far to costly to fly back and forth to San Diego for the necessary 3 month treatment.
We then found out that our insurance would not cover civilian doctors to do the procedure so we had to try and find the next step. Finally, I was able to find out that we could be seen at Walter Reid Medical Center in Maryland and there would be no wait list this time! We were so excited!! We figured we would get to start trying again right away! Well that was not the case.
It would have cost us anywhere between $5,000-$7,000 for the IVF treatment alone. On top of that we would have had to pay for flights, and or a few road trips and hotels for the 3 month process. We decided to put this on hold since funds were very tight at the time.
We decided to try and seek out private insurance here in Mass since there is a law in place that forces MA based insurance companies to pay for fertility treatments. So I got a different job and specifically asked, in interviews, what insurance the company carried. Not awkward at all. Thanks to Blue Cross Blue Shield we were able to have seven rounds of IVF.
Our second round, March 2016, we got pregnant! Unfortunately, it resulted in a miscarriage about 6 weeks in. Four rounds of IVF, two IVF doctors later, we were informed that we had an egg issue and that our original doctor knew from the beginning. Our insurance would cover one more round of IVF and we hoped for the best! Unfortunately none of our eggs were viable come time for transfer. This was clearly devastating news and we took a break.
Fast forward to January 2018. We are in need of an egg donor, private and military insurance will not cover a dime and we really would just like to have a baby at this point. Luckily, we have AMAZING people in our life and we officially have an egg donor that our doctor approves of. Problem is, coming out of pocket $18,000.
We are currently now moving to NJ even though were were ‘guaranteed’ one more year here. We now plan to be traveling the 7 hours back to Boston IVF to continue with our procedures when necessary. This will obviously only add to the cost. We can and will apply for financing when it comes time. However, we are trying to not be in immense amount of debit prior to having a baby which we know is an obvious expense increase in and of its own!
We are asking for your help in making a baby! We know it is usually just two people but we need all hands on deck for this now miracle baby to happen. We would be so unbelievably great-full to you for anything you can donate to this very important cause! Family is everything to us and we would like to be able to expand ours by two little feet! Thank you for taking the time to read and share our story and thank you for helping in anyway that you can!!!
