Hello!
We are a group of students from Bard High School Early College Queens that are a part of the nation-wide TEAMS competition (Tests for Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science). After three years of hard work and preparation, our team has qualified for the opportunity to compete against teams across the nation. We are thankful to have received the honor to show off our community and school at a national stage. We are the only public school from New York State to qualify for the national competition. This is a great opportunity for us, as we will be able to test our skills in proposal writing, giving presentations and critical problem-solving. Furthermore, we will have the chance to obtain valuable leadership experience from professional engineers and scientists.
Our team not only demonstrates great promise academically, we also hope to break barriers for groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in STEM fields. The team consists of four girls (50% of the team) and has members from all over the world, including South and East Asia, Latin America, and Africa. According to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, currently only 14% of the nation's engineers are women and only 16% are Black or Hispanic.
However, in order to attend the four-day conference, which will take place in Dallas, Texas, we need additional funding. The team consists mainly of people who come from low to low-middle class families who have to take out thousands of dollars a year in loans to deal with the financial burden of rising college tuition. As a result, our families cannot afford to pay for us to attend the event. Our school has generously offered to donate as much money as they can, but unfortunately this only covers a fraction of the total cost.
Please consider donating to our cause. This is a great opportunity for us and for our community. You will be helping to educate the engineers of the future!
