We are looking for help for Katy who has suffered life-changing injuries.
In 1995 I started the Karen Street Children’s Trust together with an English friend and a young novice nun, Consolata, who was helping street boys by teaching them under a tree. Our charity has gone on to educate around 250 disadvantaged young through school and university. Consolata then went to university where she met a young Malawian priest, Peter. They fell in love, both left the church and got married.
Since then Consolata, as well as helping me with the street children, became involved with another charity called the Mango Tree which was set up to foster AIDS orphans in western Kenya which is her home area. To date they have found homes and educated thousands of young people and she has now built a girls’ boarding school for disadvantaged girls from that area. She is a dynamic lady who has given her life to helping others.
They have never had much money but have three very bright children for whom they managed to get sponsorship to a private boarding school.
Katy, the middle one is 15 and about to do her GCSE. Katy is a particularly gifted child – academically, sports-wise and she sings beautifully.
On the 20th March 2025 Katy and her age mates were in her school compound preparing to take porridge to the nearby government school as a charity gesture when a large branch fell on her resulting in life changing injuries. She was transferred by Amref Flying Doctor to Nairobi where she was admitted to the Aga Khan Hospital.
She was deeply unconscious and was found to have suffered skull and spinal fractures, lung and abdominal trauma. She underwent several operations, gradually regained consciousness and was moved to the paediatric ward. Katy is totally paralysed from the waist down.
She was discharged from hospital on 30th April 2025 and transferred to the National Spinal Injury Referral Centre for nursing care and physiotherapy.
Katy now requires extensive rehabilitation and has gone to a specialist neurosciences hospital in India to try to get the best possible outcome from her life-changing injuries. All her friends are anxious to help her and funds are badly needed to enable her to continue this care. We would be extremely grateful for any donations, no matter how small. Thank you.
