My name is Shelby and I'm a nonbinary lesbian on testosterone who uses they/them pronouns. I've known I wanted top surgery for two years now, since 2019. However due to the realities of the American healthcare system, affording the procedure has been a struggle. In August of 2020 I had a consultation and was told that with insurance the bilateral mastectomy alone would cost $11,000 out of pocket. If I wanted my nipples reattached it would be $3,000 each nipple. It was crushing- but oddly nice to know that my nipples where worth more then my 2008 Hyundai Elantra.
Amazing how much cheaper things can become when you take Aetna out of the picture. Self pay for my top surgery and keeping my nip nops is estimated to cost $8,900.00. The other $1,100.00 being asked for would go towards prescriptions and living expenses while I have to take off work. I was hesitant to make this GoFundMe, but I have some phenomenal friends who assured me that sometimes in life you gotta just "f*ck around and find out."
I work full time as a Medical Coder in Atlanta, and make art that speaks to the gritty, lucid, ecstatic realities of growing up and living as a queer person in the American South. I sell prints, canvases, and work free lance gigs when I can to add to the pot. I've been saving up for two years, but life doesn't stop happening, and neither do the "uh oh" bills that snatch months of savings away in a hour.
