Truman and Grace vs Type 1 Diabetes
Donation protected
T1D has struck again. We are at war and there are two ways you can help. But first, our story.
Six years ago in 2010, our son Truman was diagnosed with T1D (Type 1 Diabetes). He was just 8 years old and his diagnosis was completely out of the blue. We had no history in our family. Our kids were otherwise healthy, active, and --to show my ignorance at the time-- skinny. We didn't know anything about Diabetes. It was devastating.
After the shock, came the grief. After the grief, came the hard work of battling diabetes --pricking fingers 8-10 times a day to check blood sugars; counting every carb in every meal and every snack; constantly doing the insulin math; giving the shots; wiping the tears; fighting with insurance companies and trying to get on with "normal" life -all while our son's life depended on keeping him on this narrow path of "just enough but not too much" blood sugar, something the rest of us take for granted.
After six years, we were doing well. There is no better or tougher kid than Truman. At 14 he is in good health with good numbers. It seemed like we were winning.
Then on August 30th, out of the blue, T1D struck again.
This time it is our daughter, Truman's little sister, Grace. She is 12. We had just started school. She was on edge, a little shakey, and up at night using the restroom. Already a scant 64 pounds in July, almost inperceptibly she had lost 5 pounds in just a few weeks. Some fast thinking by her mom spared her the hospital stay, but not the grief or the pain.
We are in many ways back at the beginning. But T1D has picked on the wrong family. Truman is the best coach and mentor a newly diagnosed diabetic can have and Gracey --or "G-Racer" as we like to call her-- is a fighter; she doesn't back down from anybody. T1D may have us down but we are not out. We are better equipped than before and ready for the fight.
With the JDRF Walk in November, we need your help!
The JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is committed to finding a cure, and in the meantime, making life better and safer for those who battle it every day.
As part of our fundraising this year we are out to prove that "laughter is the best medicine."
For a $25 donation to JDRF, we are partnering with Comedy Sportz Houston, the restaurant PDQ, and the MET Church - Cypress campus, to offer dinner, a show and a t-shirt.
Nine comedians from Comedy Sportz are providing the ultimate comedy showdown as "Team Tru" takes on "Team Grace" in a battle that takes sibling rivalry to a whole new level.
The first 500 donors through the door get a fantastic PDQ chicken strip dinner and either a custom "Team Tru" or "Team Grace" JDRF t-shirt.
This all takes place at The MET Church (Cypress Campus, 9690 Fry Road, Cypress, TX 77433) on November 10th. Dinner at 6pm with the show starting at 7pm.
We hope to raise $15,000 to $20,000 for a cure forType 1 Diabetes. With educational material at the event and the JDRF t-shirts we are also trying to raise awareness in our community.
So how can you help? If you are in Cypress, Texas, join us for the event. If not, then help us cover the cost of the event. Here's how:
Donations to help cover the cost of the event (basically the cost of the t-shirts and clean up) can be made on this gofundme site. Please give by October 31st. Corporate sponsors please let us know if we can say "thank you" by adding your company logo to the back of our shirt.
Tickets/Donations to JDRF for the "Team Tru vs Tream Grace" event can be made at: http://www2.jdrf.org/teamtruvsteamgrace
beginning Monday, Oct 24th. (Seating is limited.)
Thank you so much for supporting our family and all the families who are in this fight....until there is a cure.
