Dave Moore opened True Love Tattoo on San Pablo Ave in Berkeley in 1998. He’s poured his heart and soul into the shop, over 3 locations all within the same 4 blocks, and built up a beloved East Bay tattoo institution over almost 25 years. Some time in the early hours of 3/12/22, someone broke out the front window of the shop and robbed the place. They looted 3 of the stations before taking off, making off with dozens of tattoo machines and tons of supplies. Dave and Amanda Gonzales took the majority of the damage, losing not only expensive tools that they use every day to make a living, but also rare collectibles and priceless sentimental keepsakes they’ve cherished for years. The thieves must have gotten spooked, since a couple machines were left on the ground and they didn’t make it to my station or back room. It could have been worse, but it’s pretty bad. An unfortunate lapse between insurance policies means that none of this loss will be covered, and lands solely on the shop and the tattooers. After being closed for the majority of 2020 and a chunk of 2021, due to the start of the pandemic, this is a heavy blow.
I know times are tough all over, but if you’ve got some extra coin the shop could really use the help. Any money raised will go directly to replacing stolen gear and repairing the damage to the shop. We’re also putting together a list of stolen machines, in case anyone comes across someone trying to sell them. Feel free to reach out with any questions.
