my grandma is by far the strongest woman i know. and after everything that she’s been through, she’s still fighting. physically she may be weak, but her spirit is strong. she is the rock and matriarch of our family and the glue that holds us all together.
she was diagnosed with breast cancer about 20 years ago. both breasts were removed and she went through chemotherapy. she lost all of her hair and was sick a lot, but by the grace and healing power of God she persevered and made it through. she had the strength thereafter to continue to work and support her family.
there have been many other health obstacles thrown her way. she recently was diagnosed with melanoma in her right arm, which was removed. Due to the severity, the operation left her with a large hole, which was remedied with a skin graft. the medication she was taking to help with the melanoma caused a reaction that resulted in numerous painful boils. it made it hard for her to do simple everyday things like cook, bathe herself, and play with her great grandchildren.
on April 5, she went into cardiac arrest and was hospitalized. the severity of it caused her to be air-flighted to Queens Medical Center on O’ahu where she received care for two weeks. she was then sent to Maluhia Rehab Facility where she worked at regaining her strength through light physical therapy. this included things like brushing her teeth and hair. after being there for two weeks, she started having health complications and was admitted to Kuakini Medical Center. while here, grandma was diagnosed with MRSA, a contagious blood infection. she also contracted pneumonia, which caused her one of her lungs to retain a lot of mucus. she was put in isolation for two weeks. no one was allowed to visit her at this time, however, my papa, aunties Lisa and Lori, and my dad (Stuart) were physically on O’ahu in support of her getting better.
we are currently doing everything humanly possible to get my grandma back home to the Big Island to be with our family. everything is touch and go right now, but we will update her bio as the new information comes in. she is currently intubated and will remain that way to ensure her safe transport home to Waimea. because she will need to be on a ventilator to get home, the cost of transportation alone is about $15k. to say that the last month and a half has been rough for my family would be an understatement. we have been humbled by this experience and find ourselves reaching out to our extended Ohana, friends and community for help to honor my grandma’s wish of coming home to be, rest, and heal in her home in Waimea. any amount of kōkua is deeply appreciated and means so much to our family. we have faith and believe in the miracle-working God and trust His timing and His will. all donations received will go directly toward grandma’s transport, medical bills and continued care. every moment counts, so if giving is not possible for you, your prayers would mean just as much. Pray for healing. Pray for strength. Pray for endurance. Pray for victory. and likewise, we will keep you on our prayers. God bless you and we love you.
