Luna's Road to Recovery
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Sung and I’m a first time cat mom who is learning how to care for a creature at this point in my life. It took a lot of consideration and overcoming doubt to make this decision, but here’s why I did it and how we got here. *cue in the “Arms of An Angel”*
I tend to overshare personal information, so I’ll keep it brief. Over the past year, I’ve been unemployed and managing health challenges along with the associated grief and anxiety. These circumstances have left me short of resources to cover the unexpected medical expenses for my injured kitten, Luna.
About a week ago, Luna suffered an accident resulting in a broken lumbar vertebra and a detached dorsal laminate (the protective cover over the spine). Thankfully, her internal organs seem to be okay. I’m monitoring her bathroom and eating habits -- the stool pictures surprise me every time I open my photo gallery. And now, I am beginning to understand the power of a churu treat. ;0)
Jokes aside, under the close guidance of her neurologist, I’ve chosen the conservative financial path to let her bones heal on their own. This involves bracing and changing her cast, strict bed rest, medication, and routine neurological evaluations over the next 2-3 months. During this time, it means she can perform basic vital functions with some help - eat, use the bathroom, and maintain mobility of her hind legs. For me, this also means that she appears to be the sweet, happy, confident, and playful kitten that I’ve come to know over the last month we’ve spent together.
I’ve chosen this course ($6-9K) instead of spinal surgery ($18-26K) due to the overall cost, potential risks given her young age / progressing bone development, and because outgrown implants may require follow-up surgery.
Though we are in the early stages of her treatment, I’m setting a fundraising goal of $15K. This will cover what I’ve already spent ($5K) and the projected additional costs ($6-9K) for the current treatment plan. All donations will go directly toward Luna’s ongoing evaluations, medication, and necessary treatments to ensure her spine heals properly.
Luna is a spunky, resilient little girl with a strong will to live. Just ten days after her accident, the biggest challenge for us is keeping her still so she can heal. It’s a little scary to be responsible for nursing her back to health but I’m optimistic about her recovery and the outcome of a high quality of life. She’s added a sense of warmth to my home and my heart, grounding and purpose to my life, and random moments to chuckle. I anticipate that we will share many happy and healthy years together.
I am aware that many of us are trying to make ends meet and facing our daily lives, so I appreciate any donation amount and if monetary contribution isn’t an option, warm wishes for her healing and sharing this story are also appreciated. Thank you for reading and for your contribution.
Grateful for the generosity of spirit toward her recovery <3
