Troy’s Fight to Beat Cancer

Troy is many things; a son, brother, nephew, grandson, best friend and most importantly to me; a husband.

As a couple who’s been married for a year, we set our sights on saving for a house and starting a family of our own. We both had great jobs and at the tender age of 26(Troy) and 25 (me) it felt like not even the sky was the limit.

However, Troy’s and my world was turned upside down in November. After suffering loss of power and muscle atrophy in his left leg and foot, Troy had an MRI scan presenting a tumor in his spinal cord in October. A month later he had scheduled surgery to attempt to remove the tumor or as much was able to be safely removed without inflicting permanent nerve damage. Unfortunately, the entirety of the tumor was not able to be removed during surgery and we were then given the most devastating news that the subsequent pathology of the biopsy of the tumor revealed that Troy was diagnosed with a diffuse midline glioma (a very rare and aggressive tumor residing inside his spinal cord) for which there is currently no definitive cure. Victims of this tumor generally have a poor prognosis. So we are looking at every option available to beat this. As of now, December, Troy will be doing 6 weeks of radiation therapy (specifically proton beam therapy) and an oral chemotherapy simultaneously. We are also looking into further treatment options in the event that this is necessary down the road.

However as it stands, most trial drugs are only available for pediatric patients where these tumors are much more common. However, in the unfortunate event that Troy’s cancer becomes recurrent, he will be eligible to partake in certain trials down the road.

Troy has touched the lives of thousands of people through playing music and I couldn’t be more proud of everything he’s done. He’s a caring, big-hearted, loving, and hilarious guy who wants nothing more then to help others and make you laugh. If you know Troy, I know you can attest to that.

We will fight this cancer tooth and nail, will be more aggressive than it is, and we set our sights on adding ‘survivor’ to Troy’s many titles.

As we go through this journey, out of pocket medical expenses are unavoidable. We are looking into a better living space that isn’t up two large flights of stairs to make home life more accessible for Troy. I have also taken the role of caretaker for Troy at home and to and from appointments full time, as he cannot do these things alone in his current physical state. The road ahead is definitely uncertain, but we want to make sure we are able to face this thing head on and I want to do everything in my power to help him, so any donations to support his cause would be hugely appreciated and I can't thank you all enough for the support. We will be sure to make detailed updates as we go along.

Lastly, any and all excess funds that we are able to raise will be donated directly to research towards diffuse midline gliomas in the brain and spinal cord. Thank you again, and God Bless.
