Troy's Fight for Justice for UKB Members
Donation protected
My name is Troy Littledeer, and I currently serve as the Media Director for the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma (UKB). I’m reaching out because I’m engaged in a critical legal fight—not just for myself, but for the rights of all UKB citizens.
What’s Happening:
I’m standing up against a disciplinary action that was taken after I published a constitutionally protected opinion article on tribal matters. The article questioned a federal policy that impacts tribal programs. In response, I was stripped of access to our tribe’s media platforms and placed on probation.
I have not been fired—but I’ve been silenced.
This case is about much more than one job. It’s about whether tribal governments can suppress speech and punish tribal journalists for informing their people.
Why This Matters:
This is a test of the rights guaranteed to all of us under the UKB Constitution and the Indian Civil Rights Act (ICRA). Those rights include:
-Freedom of the press
-Freedom of speech
-The right to hold leadership accountable
If this action goes unchallenged, it sends a message to all tribal citizens that telling the truth can cost you your voice.
Why I Need Your Help:
I’ve been consulting with legal professionals who strongly believe this case has merit. But I cannot afford to retain legal representation on my own. Court filings, motions, and professional legal advice are expensive—but necessary to make sure this challenge is done the right way, in accordance with our tribal law, our Constitution, and federal protections.
Your support will help cover:
-Legal research and document drafting
-Filing fees and court costs
-Expert consultation and constitutional analysis
-Outreach to raise awareness of the issue
What This Case Could Achieve:
A legal decision affirming that free press is a tribal right. Protection for other tribal employees, journalists, and whistleblowers. A restored role for tribal media that truly serves the people—not political power. A precedent that honors the UKB Constitution and strengthens tribal sovereignty
This Fight is Bigger Than Me:
This is not just about restoring my access or title. It’s about ensuring every Keetoowah citizen has the right to speak, question, and be heard. The right to a free press belongs to all of us—and I am committed to defending it, not just for today, but for future generations.
If you believe in tribal democracy, press freedom, and standing up for what’s right, I ask for your help in this moment.
Wado (thank you) for standing with me.
