Our family has been devastated by yet another cancer diagnosis. My 23 year old
brother has been fighting this disease for 20 years. After 7 cancers and 6 major surgeries we never would have imagined our family would go through this again so soon.
In late March Troy showed signs of illness with what we thought was just a cold with a cough. With coronavirus being a worry he was taken to the emergency room where corona was ruled out but pneumonia was found as well as a large amount of fluid in his left lung. After 3 different courses of antibiotics, Troy seemed to be only getting worse. Upon further testing they found a malignant tumour in his chest and was diagnosed with his 3rd lymphoma.
My brother has a genetic disorder which predisposes him to certain blood cancers as well as cancers in his gastrointestinal tract. Amongst his 3 lymphoma's Troy has also had colon cancer, 2 rectal cancers and 2 stomach cancers. He is the strongest person I know and continues to fight for his family.
This treatment plan begins with a minimum 2 years of chemotherapy, many invasive procedures and countless hospital stays. With a possible bone marrow transplant; this will be his hardest fight yet.
We are a strong and proud family that has always pulled through and never asks for much, but this time is a little different. Troy's hospital stays will be longer and treatment will be more aggressive but he won't go down without a fight. During this time period where coronavirus is affecting employment, hospital stays and treatments, it is especially hard on our family as a whole. My mom is a single mother and is not considered an essential worker, at this time she is currently laid off and her income has decreased. In spite of her current financial situation the hospital expenses increase everyday. Some of these expenses are the room stays, hospital parking, gas to and from for appointments and while visiting, special foods that he can eat, medications that aren't covered and certain medical supplies needed for Troy's condition.
Somehow and some way my mom has always made it work but it has become very difficult to do so this time. As this is a pressing time for everyone we would appreciate anything to help make Troy's fight a little less stressful on our family.
