On March 16, 2019 we lost an incredible 34 year old man by the name of Troy Merrill who passed away suddenly at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta after a long term struggle as a Quadriplegic.
In April of 2006 on his way to work a tragic accident happened. He was a passenger in his company van which hydroplaned on the interstate when he was only 21 years old. Troy and his family got the sad news that he was paralyzed from the neck down which dramatically changed Troy’s life. Troy had to learn to live in a completely different way. This meant he needed support. Lots of support. Full-time 24/7 care. His mother, Deanna Kelley filled that void and became his full-time caregiver aside was Troy’s sister, Sonja Merrill.
Troy was full of life and enjoyed many things as a young man. He worked a full-time job at Knowle’s Industrial Services where he made many new friends. He enjoyed hunting, cribbage, hanging with his buddies, and family time. A few of his closest friends I’d like to take a moment to mention were Scott Crosby, Derrick Farmer,Noah Weeks, Bruce Curtis, Eric Plourde, and Shane Doyle who has welcomed Troy into heaven with open arms. He had many more friends and family members as well.
Once Troy learned to adapt the best he could as a quadriplegic and learned new ways to live as comfortably as possible with simple things we take for granted like getting around, eating, drinking, bathing, making a phone call, and every day tasks. He then enjoyed telling stories, having friends over as much as he could, lots of phone conversations, watching his favorite television shows, and mostly forever thankful he had the support of his family and close friends. Since 2006 so many things changed but he always kept his wonderful personality and his love for others. He was also very funny. Some of his favorite TV shows were The Walking Dead and Shameless. Every Saturday night he would watch the new episode of Ghost Adventures with his family. He enjoyed listening to rap music because he felt like he could relate to the way the rapper came through in their songs about life in general and he loved a good ole country tune. Troy also enjoyed the Elk’s club very very much. The Elk’s was a place where he could go socialize and get out in about. He was prideful being an Elk’s member! Sometimes at night he would also gladly go to a strip club LOL. Troy has a dog named Sam who was one of his best friends and spent a lot of time with.
What I am asking for is for this community to come together to help his family in this desperate need of time. I know for a fact Troy would help anyone who was in need financially when he could and has many times. I have actually seen him myself two different times at benefit dinners just this past year and he has helped friends and others close to him. He had a heart of gold!
His mom is an amazing person who dedicated all of her time to Troy as well as close family members. Now she has to adapt to huge sudden changes in her life once again! It was busy to care for Troy! Now she SUDDENLY has to bury her boy. This is something no parent ever wants to live to see. Deanna deserves nothing more than to grieve in peace at this time. We all know that finances can be a struggle especially when we are faced with losing a loved one so soon. We as a community can help with some of the expenses by simply donating and I am hoping forever more gratefully to reach this fundraiser goal. For Troy to Rest In Peace as well! Every dollar counts and is appreciated. Fly high buddy. We will all miss you very much. Until we meet again.
This fundraiser will be going straight from go fund me to Troy’s mother! No middle man. The check will be mailed directly to Deanna. Thank you all in advance. Pay it forward
