Trost Clubhouse documentation Las Cruces NM
Donation protected
A community group is raising money to document this culturally historic building in Las Cruces NM. Designed by Trost & Trost of El Paso in 1929 for the Las Cruces Country Club, it has been in the hands of developers since the club closed more than a decade ago. It’s survived more than 90 years, only to become a victim of demolition by neglect. With no remaining context, no sign of its earlier life, it is not a candidate for listing on the National Register of Historic Places or the NM Register.
We’ve worked with the developers for months to generate options for the building’s survival - adaptive re-use, moving it to a new location, saving only the facade and portico for rehabilitation. Despite all efforts and good intentions, a permit has been issued and demolition is imminent.
We have accepted a challenge from the owner/developers to split the costs of documenting the building so that there will be a record accessible to researchers and the historic preservation community. When completed this archive will include a set of original drawings, historic photographs, 3D laser modeling of the building as it stands now, and collected stories of its place in the culture and times of Las Cruces.
Please help us in this effort. Beyond the value of the dollars raised, the greater value is in demonstrating public support for culturally meaningful local landmarks. So, as always, monetary contributions are important, and in this situation, the number of contributors is very important as a sign of support.
Thank you for your consideration!
