Support Teacher Retirement Lawsuit
Donation protected
The teacher pension system in Kentucky (KTRS) is in dire straits. Teachers currently contribute nearly 13% of their paychecks to the system (more than the typical American worker contributes to Social Security) and the Commonwealth of Kentucky has a contractual bligation to contribute as well. However, over the past several years they have not been doing their part and the fund is 10s of billions of dollars short and is under 40% funded currently. The fund is currently losing about $4 million per day. This system supports all current retired teachers in Kentucky and is supposed to support active teachers when they retire, but at this rate the system could be bankrupt within the next few years. Kentucky teachers are not eligible for Social Security benefits.
There is currently a class action lawsuit being filed in December 2015, with several Kentucky teachers as plaintiffs. The suit is against the Commonwealth for not upholding their contractual obligation to contribute to KTRS. We are seeking support to fund this lawsuit that could potentially benefit all teachers in Kentucky.
At some point in your life, you were probably affected by a teacher in some way - they taught you content, they gave you life advice, they were proud when you were successful and they cried when you were hurting. They touched your life and you touched theirs. Most teachers are not just doing a "job" - it is much more than that. Even though many of them could have other careers and be more financially secure, they do what they do because they care about children and the future of our nation and the world. If you ever had a teacher who helped you along your life's journey, we ask you to consider contributing some small amount to help them in the fight for their retirement.
All of the dontaions will go to the Teacher Retirement Legal Fund (TRELF), which is a non-profit organization engaged in protecting and ensuring Kentucky Teachers get the retirement they have been promised. TRELF will use these funds to pay for costs associated with the lawsuit (hiring experts, legal fees, etc).
