During my mom's birthday trip to Hawaii I noticed she was not well. Her friend took my mom to the GI after she was back from Hawaii and they immediately thought that she had gallstones. They sent her for a sonogram and MRI. She was admitted to University of Maryland Medical Center formally St. Joseph’s Medical Center.
My mom received a cat scan where they unfortunately found a tumor (about the size of a golf ball) on her pancreas. That week they put my mom under to try to perform a biopsy (ERCP and EVS) but this did not work. The doctor was worried that he would disrupt the pancreas if he tried to get past the tumor to perform the biopsy. He chose not to further disrupt the pancreas and to end the test.
Dr. Mark Fraiman, then performed the Whipple surgery on my mom which was only completed 70%- they could not get the tumor out. As heartbreaking as this news was we would not accept this as a final answer. So Mom then went for two rounds of a very aggressive chemotherapy. She was half way through and had life threatening complications, so we have decided to stop the chemotherapy until she is strong again. She went to the ICU where I truly believe she was given another chance to live. It has been remarkable watching her fight. She wants this.
Right now we are working to get her better then we will discuss "Plan B" which could be a weaker form of chemotherapy or radiation. Then we hope Dr. Fraiman will reevaluate whether or not he can finish the surgery and get this tumor out of mom. We are hoping and praying for this. The road ahead is scary and we don't have answers, but what we do have is hope and faith that if anyone can beat this, it's my mom.
Please help support this cause and my mom by donating whatever you can towards her medical bills. As you can imagine being a widower and not being able to work has caused some financial stress on her. I don't want her to worry about her medical bills- I want her to focus on the number one thing which is beating this terrible cancer.
We are all here to fight with her! Show your support, whether it's a little something or a lot, every penny we raise will help alleviate some stress!
