Trill on the Hill

Hi, we are Tamsin and Lara and we run Trill on the Hill. A unique camping site, a wild place to connect to nature and each other and a plan to leave a more diverse and rich land than we found.

On Friday 20th there was a theft from our camping project. All our camping equipment was stolen, to the value of £6,000. This equipment was moved onto the land the day before, ready for the 2022 Trill on the Hill Family Camp next week.

As well as the theft of the tents and equipment, the taps were opened on the water bowsers. All 5,000 litres were left to flow out onto the land. A strange and wasteful thing to do. These actions impact not just us, but also the families we are funding to come to the camps.

Trill on the Hill projects are designed to support anyone who’d like to come - we have raised money to fund those families for whom the going rate would prove too high. This money indirectly comes from our taxes, and therefore it is a project funded partly by the public.

We were able to raise the money because it is an excellent project. Its aims are two-fold: we look after the land and leave it better than how we found it - diversity, soil quality, etc. But more than this, we aim to educate kids and their families about our environment and the way we live. We believe it is only by doing this that real change will happen.

We do also charge the going rate to those that can afford it, these funds going into the pot to pay staff and to provide further opportunities for a wide range of people. On a personal note, Lara and Tamsin are not making a big wage (or even a small one!) from Trill on the Hill. We both work full time on other jobs to make a living.

This project is our passion and feels deeply important to us. We do this because we care; we are not here to run a glamping site (I’m not knocking glamping, it’s just not us) or have big parties or disturb the peace. We run very few events each year to ensure that we maintain space for nature to thrive undisturbed.

Everyone needs to experience nature, fresh air and good companionship. Experience and developing an understanding of the natural world is how we learn to respect it and learn how to care for it together with each other. We feel that this is one of the most fundamental things to learn to secure a positive future.

We will not be deterred, and as such, we are asking our community to help us rebuild our kit store. It will cost £5,000 to replace the stolen kit. We know it’s a vast sum of money; camping equipment is expensive. Every penny we raise will provide equipment for people who don’t have it or fund a place on a camp.
