TriBecca NYC Triathlon 2021
I am scheduled to compete in the New York City Triathlon (NYC Tri) 1 week from today, 11th July 2021. The NYC Tri is an International/Olympic distance Triathlon involving a 0.93 Mile Swim, followed by a 24.8 Mile Bike, followed by a 6.2 Mile Run.
As for me? I decided to do this for a number of reasons. Firstly, I wanted to set myself a physical challenge last year in memory of three close family members who have passed away. Yvonne, my mother-in-law passed from cancer in late 2019. My Granda Mick and Nana Lily both passed away from heart attacks when I was younger. For that reason, and in keeping with the 'tri' theme, I have decided to raise money for three important charities doing fantastic work. Each charity will get a third of the amount raised.
1. The Irish Heart Foundation (Ireland)
2. The Irish Cancer Society (Ireland)
3. The Wounded Warrior Project (USA)
Finally, this time last year I had never swam in the open water, believed I was born without the ability to run and hadn't taken my bike out of our shed in over 3 years. It's my 30th Birthday 12 days after the NYC Tri and I wanted to close-out my 20's on a high, having proved to myself that I could swim in the Hudson River, cycle 40km along the West Side Highway and run 10km(non-stop!) through Central Park to the finish line.
There have been many bumps along the way, and lots of problems I could have used as excuses to cancel or postpone, but I have persevered. From my new bike not arriving, to problems with my own heart, to moving house and not to mention the travel restrictions between Ireland and the U.S., it has been one hell of journey! I had planned to start the fundraising earlier but there was too much uncertainty. I can now safely say that I will be there, ready to jump into the Hudson, next Sunday morning!
It started as an idea, became a dream and hopefully by this time next week it will be a reality.
Thank you for supporting!
