On October 11, I will be doing a solo Half Ironman distance event (1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21.2km run) to help Alaura Gallagher, a 25-year-old mother of two who is in a serious battle against cancer for the second time in two years.
This Moncton resident is fighting aggressive cancer that has spread to several areas of her body – but there is still hope. If you can imagine the challenges she is facing, please turn those thoughts into actions. Alaura is also a former student of mine and a personal friend.
I will be donating the race fees from my cancelled 2020 Half Ironman race as part of my effort to help raise $25,000 for Alaura. All funds raised will go towards her family’s personal and medical expenses as they continue this battle for Alaura’s health.
An urgent need.
Alaura, her husband Christopher, and her two children Ariella (five) and Andrew (nine), are coping through the struggle. The family finds themselves on one salary, with multiple transportation and medical expenses, and doing all they can to look forward to the day they can be together cancer-free. They are looking at several more months (at least) of financial struggles to keep up with the challenge they are facing. Whether you are an athlete whose events were cancelled, or your big summer vacation became a low-key staycation, or you just care about a family in need, I ask you to consider participating in A Tri for Alaura.
How can you make a difference?
A) Everyone is welcome!
For all those who may not be able to commit to participating in one of the areas listed below, but who would simply want to help Alaura and her family, your donation would be greatly appreciated.
B) Triathlon Challenge
For all my triathlon and endurance racing friends across Canada and around the world, you are challenged to do your own triathlon endurance event or training day (the distance of your choice) and donate one Race Fee (in part or in whole) from a cancelled or postponed event. Teams are also welcomed!
C) Community Challenge
You don’t have to be part of the racing world to use Alaura’s challenge as motivation to give yourself a push to get out and exercise. Non-triathletes are encouraged to pick their favourite active living activity, walking, biking, running swimming, hiking, paddling or whatever you like and make a donation for the amount of your choice.
D) Corporate Challenge
Encouraging healthy living makes sense for everyone, and I encourage organizations to share this challenge and Alaura’s story with their employees. If you are a decision-maker for your organization, let your employees know that you encourage active living for everyone (and that you made a donation to A Tri for Alaura on behalf of all your employees).

If you are like me, 2020 has been a challenging year. But, there have also been tremendous opportunities and reasons to be thankful, and for me, a big one of those has been the continued opportunity to count Alaura as a friend and inspiration.
A Tri for Alaura is our chance to make something good of this year by helping someone in need. Please, if you can, join me in doing what we can to help someone that I know would do the same for all of us.
