Sydney for Nepal
Donation protected
Dear friends, colleagues and well-wishers,
Nepal was hit by 2 major earthquakes and more than 240 after shakes since 25th April 2015. It was declared a major disaster zone. Many experts and their teams locally and internationally arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal and gave their assistance in the hour of need. The acute phase of the disaster is relatively contained. The crescendo in relief work has passed. Majority of the international teams have now returned to their country.
However the infra structure of Kathmandu and villages in the earthquake ravaged parts of the country remain in tatters. There is lack of proper resource allocation. This includes hospitals in the capitol and remote health posts.
When the news of the first earthquake reached us in Sydney, Australia, it was with fear and trepidation we called our family in Nepal. They were safe. Then there was the second one. And there were the unending after shakes. Our family members are still camping out in the cold weather in Kathmandu. Days have passed. The weather often brings gusty winds and the earth even responded vehemently with another shake - it was landslides this time. There remains fear of the impending monsoon. It has left many ever so anxious - of safety, disease, and uncertainty.
Nepali diaspora globally, professionals and otherwise, have come back to their motherland Nepal, and have united to rebuild Nepal. Many donated supplies for sustenance, equipment to build homes, and many others were on the field building homes, distributing food, and tents, while others provided medical service. As a medical professional, I could not just watch the news and hear the stories. I had to do something. I asked for help. In this ebb and flow of life, I am humbled to meet many new beautiful souls who have gone above and beyond to help us help Nepal.
We have successfully collected with more than 3600kg of surgical supplies. The first lot was sent to Nepal via donated freight money. Now I am reaching out to collect fund so that it will enable us to -
1. Freight donated medical/surgical supplies
2. Buy medical/surgical supplies
3. If there is a surplus, buy supplies for sustenance and contribute towards building homes.
You can reach us on Facebook under Sydney Doctors, Nurses and Friends for Nepal at https://www.facebook.com/groups/358787517648800/
You can also view the hospitals and outreach programs we are supporting in Nepal.
Nepal needs help with recovery. We appreciate your donations.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Bina Gurung
