Trevor Nelson Addiction Relief Fund
This fund has been started by all those who know and love Trevor Nelson and his family.
Earlier this month we all lost someone very special. Trevor Nelson passed after a long fought battle with addiction. No one can better explain the type of person you are than your mother. Lynne Nelson writes: "Trevor was the most handsome, intelligent, warm-hearted person you would have ever met. And while I'm talking to you, let me tell you about the dreams I had for him. When Trevor was very young, I knew he was special. He loved everyone he met and he loved to make everyone laugh; he was clever and quick-witted. He was extremely warm-hearted, charismatic, and intelligent. He made everyone that knew him feel like they were his best friend. He was proud of the fact that he still used the manners his "momma" taught him, "yes ma'am", "no ma'am", "please and thank you." He always called me his "rock" and I was so proud of that."
Through all of the tradgedy that the Nelson family has faced, something amazing has happened. Both Brett, Trevor's younger bother, and Lynne have become advicates for Heroine addiction. Brett has started a petition to make Narcan, a tool used in saving the lives of overdose victims, mandatory to all local police departments. That petition currently has 1,661 signitures.
The problem with Heroine addiction is real. Since 2010 overdoses have skyrocketed by 300%. As a society we are so quick to prescribe opiates and there is little to no follow up. There are instructions on how to wean yourself off but it is up to the individual to maintain that schedule. When you're dealing with something as powerful as an opiate, if you're not careful, it is very easy to become physically dependent. Pills naturally get cut off and then you find yourself needing opiates. Enter Heroine. More must be done to solve this problem. It is something that has become all too common and it cannot continue.
We have spoken with the Chief of Fuquay Police Department and she is very passionate about saving lives of those in need and stopping Heroine from becoming available. Narcan is a great tool, but it is only the first step. Those who struggle with addiciton need professional help and the first step is awareness. She has already begun the process of procuring Narcan. FVPD does not currently have Narcan in all patrol cars because most of the time either EMS or Fire will be on the scene before them. Both of those departments do carry the drug. There are instances where FVPD could potentially need the drug and she believes having the drug on hand would be a valuable asset.
This fund has been started for 2 reasons. First we would like to donate the funds needed to supply Fuquay Police Department with Narcan. Secondly all remaining funds will go to different organizations that help with addiction recovery. Once someone has been saved from an overdose, their real battle will begin and the most important thing is to have a support system to help them beat addiction.
With your help we can stop these tradgedies from happening and we can help addiction victims get the help they so desperately need.
PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION AS WELL!
