Trees for Chichester (Mind the Gap 2022)

Donation protected
Chichester Tree Wardens are fundraising to plant more trees across the city in 2022/23.

In 2020, 70 street trees were funded in three Chichester City communities, using West Sussex County Council’s Donate a Tree Scheme . 45 of these were funded with the help of GoFundMe appeals, a further 16 by charity Trees for Cities, and others by individuals organising their trees with WSCC direct. GoFundMe appeals in 2021 resulted in 10 more trees being planted.

This year, we want to bring the benefits of trees, and the satisfaction of communities working together to get trees planted, to everyone in the city, from Summersdale to Whyke/Terminus Road, West Broyle/Fishbourne Road East to Swanfield/Portfield/Arundel Park. Our focus is on procuring container-grown trees large enough to withstand the stresses of growing up in public urban spaces.

Please:
  • donate whatever you wish, and that you can afford, to this GoFundMe appeal and add your Words of Support (please include your preferred area of the city for these funds to be spent, if you have one);
  • tell us where you'd like there to be a tree by filling in the form on our website (click here ).

We will:
  • consider all publicly-accessible locations suggested for tree planting and the types of tree that may be suitable;
  • try to identify the landowner for each location where a tree could be planted;
  • work with the landowner, if they are willing, to get as many trees planted as we can fund in winter 2022/23 and 2023/24; and
  • work with local people to make sure each tree funded will be welcome and can be cared for (volunteer waterers essential);
  • post Updates to this fundraiser to let you know how we're getting on.
If we can, we will try to make your money go further by applying for sponsorships and grants.

For street trees to be planted this winter, the deadline for donations is Monday 11th July 2022. (This gives us time to finalise and place the donation order, currently listed as £209.80 per tree, with WSCC before its end-of-July deadline.) Our fundraiser will continue to run to maximise our opportunities to plant in different locations and to apply for sponsorship and grants.

Approximately 3% of donations will be taken by gofundme for processing fees. Planting costs will include watering tubes, stakes, ties and mulch. Tree gators (specialist bags fitted around tree bases to help water the tree) may be needed in some locations. We may use a small proportion of donations to pay for publicity costs.

You can find out more about your volunteer Chichester Tree Wardens on our website, including a new project to understand and value the trees we have, and the chance to volunteer to help, coming soon.

With best wishes, and our thanks for appreciating trees,
