Tree for Jules
Donation protected
We have reserved a tree to be planted later this year in St Andrews Park here in Bristol. It will be an Austrian Pine sapling, otherwise known as Black Pine, which will grow over the years into a majestic tree. It will also have a plaque reading; For Jules, the coolest human.
This we hope will serve as a cheerful and poetic continuation of Jules's memory, and for all who had the privilege of knowing her. It will also serve as a cool meeting point for all of us in the years to come, a sort of hub for which we can have picnics, and gatherings in a place that meant something to us and her.
No one has to contribute huge sums, but if everyone contributes a small amount each (£2-£5) we can comfortably hit the mark and all have had a hand in erecting this fitting natural monument to her.
It's been difficult for everyone accepting the loss of someone who seemed as though she was going to accompany us through all of our long lives. We can keep her memory and spirit alive by celebrating her and finding ways back to each other through her. I feel much in the spirit of Jules we need this space to mourn her, remember her, to reminisce of all the time shared with her. She connected so many people together effortlessly, she was magnetic! We were all drawn to her.
This is a small token of our everlasting love for you Jules.
UPDATE BELOW:
Hello again everyone. Just another update here, but before that I would like to take the opportunity to welcome newly added people to this group. I want to say in the most heartfelt way I can that I am deeply sorry if this is the first you're hearing and learning of Jules's passing. Since her death (May 7th 2020), her family and friends have had a lot to deal with and it was seemingly obvious that we couldn't contact everyone Jules knew as our energies were being spent on processing our grief, which is still ongoing and the acceptance of her absence.
Jules's battle with cancer ended after additional health complications and at the beginning of a pandemic. I don't feel immediately at liberty to give every detail about her condition, as a lot of her closest friends and family are still facing the hardships and to bring it all back up again is painful. We're here to remember how great she was and not how ill she became. It isn't simply that she was a victim to such a terrible disease, but that she isn't in our lives anymore that makes it so difficult. The hope is that this memorial will help to keep her in our lives as much as possible.
Thank you for all the warms words about her and for being so damn supportive! You have been fantastic.
Now regarding what will happen next with the amazing amount of funds that we've achieved in gathering together...
Firstly, we will pay for the tree sapling in July time when the payment is due. We then just have to wait for when Bristol City Council plant it. Close to that time or soon after, people should check here for any information to do with an event. We will certainly organize a celebration to mark the tree's coronation/ birth/ beginnings and obviously want whoever can attend to attend. I appreciate overseas people will need a prompt heads up, we won't intentionally do anything that forces people to miss out. Maybe a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place, but definitely music, food and drinks. This will be the time for people who didn't get the chance over the many lockdowns we've endured, to share the stories and memories of Jules with each other.
Secondly, with all the generous excess of money, we can stretch across not only our commitments to the charities we've mentioned before (Cancer Research, St Peter's Hospice, Stroke), but also newly proposed ideas by friends and family members. One great idea, is to also have a commemorative piece down in Falmouth, where so many of us studied with and first met Jules. It was a very important place and time for us during uni, as it was integral to our growing friendships and who we became as people. The finest of us, Jules, was moulded along with the rest and it would be entirely fitting to mark that down there too. Lots of us still reside in Cornwall and the surrounding areas, so a plaque or bench or a bed of flowers would be accessible to others who can't regularly visit Bristol. Another idea suggested by a family member, was to use some of the cash to donate to the art courses/ illustration BA at the university and more specifically for art supplies and materials. Many of you will know that Jules was an excellent student ambassador who fiercely defended the quality of the student experience on courses and championed their voices when the top brass threatened with cuts and all sorts. So helping fund art departments kinda feels really like the position Jules would have maintained. There have been many other great suggestions recently, and we'll have to consider which ones are doable, but also we think that some sort of vote or poll will be used soon within the group to democratically decide.
One last thing - keep donating if you're able to and help by sharing this link to assist us in gaining even more support, so we can do as much as we can in Jules's name. xx
