Treatment for Deuce's brain infection

Near the end of November my dog Deuce started profusely itching and scratching at his ears. Given that he has a history of allergy and ear infections, I wasn't too concerned until it was more severe than I'd ever seen it. Since the 24th of November he's been to the vet five separate times, with bills for each visit adding up exponentially. A few days ago he began losing his balance and ability to walk, and currently can hardly keep himself upright when sitting down.
As of right now he's at a neurologist's office for an overnight stay., potentially longer if surgery is needed. The neurologist doesn't think it's an ear infection, but instead an infection that's spread to his brain and affecting his central nervous system. We are waiting on more tests, but she thinks there's a road to recovery as long as we can get the infection under control, but there's still a chance cancer might be involved.
Besides potentially losing my best friend of 9 years, my biggest fear is not being able to afford his treatment and recovery. I've already spent over $6,000 since Nov. 24th, and it's likely the cost is going to continue to rise as we treat him and potentially go the surgery route. I am a freelance photographer and videographer, and my business has been hit hard during the pandemic, much like a lot of other businesses. I've had to dip heavily into my savings, and I'm worried that I'm going to hit a point where I have to choose between money for my own survival vs. my dog's survival, and that's not a position I'm inclined to consider. He is my closest companion who travels everywhere with me and an all-around incredible dog. I rescued him at my lowest point during my struggle with depression after a suicide attempt, and he has subsequently saved my life numerous times simply by being there and loving me no matter what.
I'm not sure how expensive this is all going to get. I've already spent $9,000 in the last month and we haven't reached a full diagnosis yet. Everything is still in flux and we are taking this minute by minute.
