‐---------------------------------------
Masanga Hospital is located in the middle of Sierra Leone. From miles around, people come here for treatment of their wounds. Some have had wounds for over 10 years and tried various clinics and methods. Masanga has a good reputation in the country for solving complex wounds; the wound dressers here are often complimented for their diligence and knowledge.
The importance of healing wounds effectively becomes clear when looking at data of The Masanga Wound Clinic. In 2019, during a period of six months 156 patients were treated. Sadly, 98 of these 156 patients left the clinic with wounds which had not completely healed. Six months later, 20 of these 98 people (20%) had died due to wound complications.
With your donation, we want to improve this situation.
Our Impact Targets
We consider the project successful if we achieve:
Reorganization: more effective treatment. In the first two months of the project, a bottom-up created management strategy will be written. This includes a time schedule which describes which interventions will be implemented in the following four months.
Education: the four wound dressers become trainers and have shared their knowledge with 10 colleagues according to a train the trainer method. The level of knowledge and results of education will be measured through pre-and post-tests. Ideally, special trainings for Tonkolili's rural Health Centre staff will also be organized.
Research: To monitor results, a 50% increase of successful wound treatment: In 2019, 33% of patients (approximately 100 of 300) had a healed wound six months after discharge. With this project, we hope to increase this by 50%. Our aim is to sucessfully treat 150 patients on a yearly basis. This means 50 extra patients will be discharged home without wounds each year, allowing them to go back to fulfilling their role in society and providing an income for their families.
Partners in this Wound Care Project are the Asker Group and Stichting Dayalu. Your contribution will complement our budget of 20.000 for this project.
