Traumatic Eye Injury in a Young Soul

Donation protected
Thanks for taking some time from your day to learn about my friend, Leo!  If you can help with a donation, many thanks!  If not, prayers and positive thoughts for healing are most welcome and appreciated, too!

Leo Miller, is my best friend's oldest son.  He is 8 years old and is one of the kindest, sweetest, most gentle souls I have ever met.  He is also truly his parents' son.  Jay and Emily, his parents, are adventurers and lovers of life and have instilled in Leo and his younger brother, Jameson, their senses of wonder, curiosity, kindness and joy for the world.  The entire family spends as much time out of doors as possible, hiking, learning, skiing, harvesting, and adventuring at their home in rural NH.

On October 30th, Leo sustained a severe injury to his eye while playing outside with his friends . He experienced a direct hit to his left eye from a tree branch, puncturing through the cornea and lens of his eye. Leo was rushed to Tufts Medical Center in Boston for emergency ophthalmic surgery, where Dr. Kenyon, cornea specialist, and his team successfully removed his lens and began extensive repairs to  his severely damaged iris and cornea.  Needless to say this has been a traumatic experience for Leo and his family.

Leo's care, expecting to exceed over $15,000 (in deductibles and co-insurance) by January of 2019, will be mounting quickly with further procedures and the associated aftercare for an injury of this magnitude.

At this point, Leo is healing well from this first round of procedures, but he has lost vision in his damaged eye.
The road to recovery and regaining sight will be long and costly. At minimum Leo will require two additional surgeries, one to remove the numerous stitches in his eye and reassess the viability of his cornea. A second significant surgery will occur in the future to implant a new synthetic lens to restore his vision if possible. In the meantime, the ophthalmologic team will attempt to give him functional vision with a surface contact lens, potentially requiring a third corneal surgery if it is not deemed viable.

This is where you can help!

Jay and Emily are some of the most hardworking people I know and it took no small amount of convincing by family and friends to start this campaign for, like most of us proud New Englanders, they have a hard time accepting the charity of others, though they frequently and freely give of themselves.  Jay is a craftsman and boatbuilder by trade and Emily an entrepreneur ND running her own holistic healthcare practice.  They both work extremely hard to raise their boys in a kind, caring, loving home and will be challenged to shoulder the burden of medical expenses of this magnitude.

Any help you can provide; any size donation, will be most appreciated and put to good use.

Please help us get Leo through this journey and back to having two healthy, functioning peepers so he is able to focus on living life to the fullest extent that he can!  I have no doubt he will repay your kindness as he grows and loves  those around him!

Thank You!
